Christijan Albers (born 16 April 1979 in Eindhoven, North Brabant, Netherlands) is a Dutch racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters between 2001 and 2004, before returning for a final campaign in 2008.[1] A future Formula One driver and Team Principle after his time in DTM, Albers would claim a best end-of-season placing of second in 2003, having partnered Bernd Schneider throughout the season.[2]
Albers began his DTM career in a year old Mercedes run by Persson Motorsport in 2001, the Dutchman joining Thomas Jäger at the German squad for his rookie season.[3] Albers would have to wait until the Sachsenring round to claim his first points finish, finishing on the podium with a late-season ninth position leaving him fourteenth on the Championship.[4]
The 2002 season saw Albers move to the Team Rosberg squad for his sophomore season, the Dutchman joining Stefan Mücke as the senior driver in the team.[5] The change in point scoring systems meant that points were hard to come across for Albers, with the Dutchman only scoring five across the campaign.[6]
2003 saw Albers earn a late promotion to the full factory HWA Team on the eve of the season, with the Dutchman partnering Schneider for the season after Uwe Alzen quit the squad.[7] The Dutchman went on to challenge his veteran teammate for the Championship title, claiming four victories only to fall four points short of Schneider at the finale.[2]
Again partnering Schneider for 2004, Albers would prove to be one of the strongest of the Mercedes pilots after the DTM's switch to full saloon cars, finishing third with one win.[8] That campaign earned Albers a call up to Formula One for 2005, with the Dutchman seemingly leaving the series for good at the end of 2004.[9]
Yet, after three seasons in F1 Albers made a return to the DTM in 2008, joining Katherine Legge at the Kolles Racing squad in a two year old car.[1] A difficult campaign in an old car saw Albers fail to score at all, leaving him down in seventeenth in the Championship after retiring from four races.[10]
After 2008 Albers would move across to sportscar racing, before his continued funding issues saw him eventually step away from active racing in 2012.[9]
Background[]
Albers' career began in karting in his native Netherlands, with Albers winning the Dutch National Championship in 1997.[9] That season also saw Albers win the Benelux Formula Ford Championship, resulting in Albers moving into full time single-seater racing in 1998.[9] That campaign saw Albers run to fifth in the German Formula 3 Championship, while also appearing in several one-off F3 races.[9]
Brand Battles: 1999 - 2000[]
The 1999 season saw Albers adopted into the Opel roster of young drivers, with the German manufacturer again deploying the Dutchman in German F3.[9] Albers duly won the German F3 title, resulting in a graduation to International Formula 3000 for the 2000 season.[9] There, Albers would fail to claim a single points finish, resulting in a change of focus for the young Dutchman in 2001.[9]
DTM History[]
Albers took a seat in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship ahead of the 2001 season, with Persson Motorsport signing him to partner Thomas Jäger in their pair of year-old AMG-Mercedes CLK-DTMs.[3]
Post-DTM Career[]
Albers moved into Formula One for the 2005 season, the Dutchman joining Minardi for the season after impressing a test driver and in the DTM.[9] The Dutchman would claim points at the infamous 2005 United States Grand Prix, before moving to the Spyker team for 2006.[9] After completing the 2006 season Albers would get a further half-season in F1, before the Dutchman was dropped by the Dutch squad after his sponsorship money ran out.[9]
Sportscars and Superiority[]
For 2009 Albers moved into sportscar racing, with Audi deploying him in the Le Mans Series for the season after making his debut in the American Le Mans Series at the end of 2008.[9] After finishing fourteenth in a customer Kolles car, Albers stepped away from racing due to a lack of funding, only appearing in the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans.[9] Albers then sat out 2011 before returning to racing in 2012 to compete in a single round of the inaugural World Endurance Championship, before moving into team management with the Caterham F1 Team in 2014.[11]
