Clemens Schmid (born 18 August 1990 in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria) is an Austrian racing driver, who competes in the 2022 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with the Grasser Racing Team.[1] Schmid was the first driver announced by GRT after their decision to only focus on the DTM in 2022, having raced for them in the ADAC GT Masters in 2020 and 2021.[1]
Background[]
Schmid began his career in karting, competing in various championships across Germany, Austria and Italy through until the end of 2008.[2] After sitting out a year, Schmid moved into car racing, taking a seat in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and finishing eighteenth, alongside two appearances in the ADAC GT Masters.[2] Two further seasons in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany would follow for Schmid in 2011 and 2012, with Schmid also making apapearances in the Porsche Supercup and GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, finishing third in the latter.[2]
Middle East Master: 2013 - 2015[]
The winter of 2012/13 saw Schmid return to the Cup Challenge Middle East, and duly saw the Austrian racer secure his first major title with nine victories.[2] That earned Schmid a full season in the Supercup for 2013, finishing seventeenth, before a return to the Middle East to defend his title.[2] Despite seven wins the Austrian ace would fall shy of retaining the crown, before full campaigns in the Carrera Cup Germany and Supercup.[2]
2014/15 saw Schmid reclaim the Middle East title, again with seven victories, before moving away from the Porsche stable after a run to third in his debut in the 24H Dubai.[2]
A Challenger: 2016 - 2021[]
In 2015 Schmid would return to the GT Masters, joining the Bentley factory team in a run to nineteenth in the Championship.[2] 2016 saw Schmid join the Mercedes roster with HTP Motorsport in a variety of series including the VLN and Blancpain Endurance Series, albeit without success.[2] A move to the Audi GT3 stable followed for Schmid in 2017, although again the Austrian racer would only finish mid-table in the various series he competed in.[2]
After spending 2018 and 2019 effectively on the reserve roster for both Attempto Racing and AutoArena Motorsport, Schmid joined the factory supported Grasser Racing Team in 2020, driving a factory Lamborghini in the ADAC GT Masters.[2] Finishing 33rd overall, GRT retained Schmid for 2021, partnering him with Mike David Ortmann for a campaign that ended with the duo in 24th overall.[2]
DTM History[]
Schmid was the first driver to be announced by the Grasser Racing Team ahead of their debut season in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship in 2022.[1]
