DTM Brands Hatch is an annual race event, staged as part of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship at Brands Hatch in West Kingsdown, Kent, United Kingdom.[1] Held eleven times in DTM's history, the "Indy" version of the Kentish circuit first appeared on the DTM calendar in 2006, and remained a permanent fixture until 2013.[2]

After disappearing for four years DTM Brands Hatch was restored to the calendar in 2018, albeit with a change to running on the full "Grand Prix" circuit.[3] The circuit duly signed a multi-year deal with the series, and would hence return for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.[4]

History[]

Brands Hatch was first used as a bicycle racing circuit in the 1920s, when a group of cyclists obtained permission to use Brands Farm to complete time trials.[1] Motorcycles soon replaced bicycles at the dirt-track venue, with the basic Indy circuit carved into the natural amphitheatre.[1] After the Second World War the circuit was paved and began running 500cc single seater racing, before the British Saloon Car Championship made the circuit its home in 1958.

Formulae and Touring: 1960 - 2000[]

Brands Hatch soon established itself as one of the hubs of British motorsport, with a circuit extension in 1960 resulting in the creation of the "Grand Prix" loop.[1] The extended circuit attracted more events to the amphitheatre, with Formula One hosting the British Grand Prix there in 1964.[1] Brands Hatch would then host the British Grand Prix every other season until 1986, while intermittently hosting the "Race of Champions" in between World Championship races.[1]

Elsewhere, the BSCC would continuously use the circuit, often two or three times a season, while the ETCC similarly used the circuit.[1] Sports cars would also intermittently visit the track, resulting in the installation of a chicane at Dingle Dell to slow the Group C cars when they visited in 1988.[1] In terms of single seaters, meanwhile, it was International F3000 that became the venue's headline act, also using the full Grand Prix loop.[1]

Contracts and Curfews: 2000 - Present[]

The construction and extension of a housing estate near the circuit in the late 1990s resulted in the circuit begin issued with a curfew, meaning that all racing activity had to end before 6:30 pm.[1] Furthermore, the circuit was denied the chance to build an extension to the Grand Prix loop, resulting in plans to bid for the British Grand Prix in 2000 evaporating.[1] Owners Octagon hence decided to put the circuit up for sale as it was unable to host any major international single-seater series, with Jonathan Palmer and MotorSport Vision purchasing the circuit in 2004.[1]

MSV quickly invested in the circuit, expanding the paddock and pit complexes as much as they could, resulting in A1 Grand Prix hosting its British round at the circuit in 2005.[1] In 2006 the DMSB signed a deal to host a round of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters at the circuit, which saw the German series use the Indy Circuit.[1] The World Touring Car Championship also began using the circuit in 2006, while A1 GP hosted its final ever race at the circuit in 2009.[1]

DTM became the fastest series to race at Brands Hatch after that point, although after the 2013 season the DMSB moved away.[1] The BTCC would hence be restored as the circuit's premier racing series, while GT racing in the form of the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup became a major fixture.[1]

DTM History[]

Circuit History[]

MSV and the DMSB signed a deal for the DTM, and its associated supports, to use the Indy circuit at Brands Hatch for the 2006 season, meaning that the race was set entirely within the natural amphitheatre.[5] The Indy circuit would subsequently host every DTM race at the circuit until the series left after the 2013 race.[6] However, the DTM would return to Brands Hatch in 2018, and would sign up to use the full Grand Prix version of the circuit.[7]
