Daniel Juncadella Pérez-Sala (born 7 May 1991 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a Spanish racing driver, competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2013 and 2019.[1] A former factory driver for Mercedes, Juncadella would compete in the DTM for six seasons, taking one race victory in 2018.[2]

Juncadella was placed in the DTM for the 2013 season, with Mercedes placing him in their customer Mücke Motorsport for the season, having won the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2012.[3] The Spaniard, partnered by fellow rookie Pascal Wehrlein, would go on to claim a handful of points finishes, claiming sixteenth in the Championship.[4]

Retained by Mücke for 2014, Juncadella would have a quieter second season, only claiming two points finishes as he dropped to eighteenth in the Championship.[5] Regardless, the Spanish racer was retained again for 2015, although another quiet campaign saw Juncadella slip further down to twentieth in the Championship.[6]

Moved to the factory HWA Team for the 2016 season after Mücke withdrew, another difficult season would follow for the Spaniard, who ended the season last in the Championship with just six points.[7] As a result Juncadella would be dropped from Mercedes' squad of drivers for 2017, becoming a reserve driver as he moved to the Blancpain GT Series.[8]

After a better showing in Blancpain, Mercedes would bring Juncadella back to the DTM for 2018, partnering him with Paul di Resta.[2] The Spaniard subsequently enjoyed his best season in the Series to that point, claiming his first victory at Brands Hatch, en-route to fifteenth in the Championship.[9]

Juncadella left the Mercedes stable after their withdrawal from the DTM, and instead took a seat in the new Aston Martin DTM programme.[1] The Spanish racer would subsequently battle an underdeveloped car for the campaign, although still claimed his best Championship result of fourteenth in the Championship.[10]

Background[]

A brief campaign in karting between 2005 and 2006, Juncadella became a fully fledged racing driver in the Formula Master Junior championship in 2007.[11] Formula BMW Europe called in 2008, with his fourth in the championship seeing him enter the series again in 2009, taking second overall.[11] Continuing in single seaters, Juncadella entered the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2010, taking eighth, while also entering the GP3 Series.[11]

For 2011, Juncadella took an attention grabbing victory at the Macau Grand Prix, with Force India taking an interest in his career.[11] Third in the Euro Series that season also earned him respect, before he won the championship in 2012.[11] He was inducted into Force India's F1 programme, with backing from Mercedes-Benz.[11]

DTM History[]

Mücke Motorsport took on Juncadella for 2013, with the Spaniard taking three points finishes on his way to sixteenth in the championship.[11] In 2014, Juncadella just missed out on the podium at the Lausitzring, finishing fourth having battled from near the back of the field.[11] 2015, however, didn't start positively for Juncadella, with a fifteenth place finish his best result.
