The Deutscher Motor Sport Bund e.V. (German Motor Sport Association in English), commonly abbreviated to the DMSB, is a German motorsport organisation based in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany.[1] Originally founded in 1949 as the Oberste Nationale Sportbehörde, the DMSB acts and an overarching licensing body for other German motorsport and road car associations, including the ADAC, AvD and DMV, and is a member itself of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.[1]
The DMSB works as the organiser for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, a role which it has conducted since the inaugural 2000 season.[2] It also serves as a ruling body for the DTM to determine the rulebook, working alongside ITR e.V., while also working alongside the FIA for sporting rules.[1]
History[]
The origins of the DMSB is found in 1949, with the recreation of the Oberste Nationale Sportbehörde as a means to restart the German motorsport industry.[1] That entity would go on to license and organise various motorsport events in Germany, with recognition nationally from the ADAC and AvD, as well as internationally from the FIA.[1] In its role the ONS would oversee the return of the German Grand Prix, organised by the AvD, as well as the European Grand Prix by the ADAC.[1]
In 1972 Hubert Linge would organise the DMSB-Staffel, which would be the first pseudo-professional track safety organisation, which trained and equipped marshals.[1] The Staffel were given training in using fire extinguishers, basic medical training, and would have a track doctor, and were deployed with Porsche 914 or 911s to act as rapid response to incidents.[1] All major DMSB events were mandated to use the Staffel from 1975 onward.[1]
On 8 June 1997 the DMSB was formally founded, with the ONS merged with the contemporary Oberste Motorradsport-Kommission for motorcycle racing to create an umbrella organisation for all German national racing.[3] The new creation, which was agreed to by all of Germany's major and regional motorsport bodies, would represent German motorsport within the FIA and FIM, and would sign up to the FIA's sporting code.[3] In 2004 the DMSB was added to the German Olympic Sports Confederation, granting the DMSB a means of funding and the ability to lobby for motorsport as part of the Olympic Games.[3]
DTM History[]
The DMSB and its predecessor the ONS were responsible for organising both the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, which served as the organisation's headline motorsport series.[1] For the revival of the DTM in 2000 the DMSB would work alongside DEKRA to organise the series, forming a new rulebook unique to the series.[1] In 2003 DEKRA were replaced by ITR e.V., with the DTM getting FIA accreditation/recognition to use the FIA sporting rulebook and scoring system.[1]
