Edward "Ed" Jones (born 12 February 1995 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates) is an Anglo-Emirati racing driver, who competes for Audi Sport Team WRT in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship.[1] A veteran of the IndyCar Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Jones would make his DTM debut in 2020, having returned to the European racing circuit after 2019.[1]
Background[]
Jones began his career in karting in the Middle East, claiming the 2005 UAE karting Championship, before moving to Europe in 2008.[2] After three seasons Jones would move into the InterSteps Championship in 2011, securing fourth in his maiden season in single-seater racing.[2] Jones would also compete in various Formula Renault UK Championships, in preparation for a full FR campaign in 2012.[2]
European Embarks: 2012 - 2014[]
Jones competed in the European spanning Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and NEC for 2012, although he would only claim one podium across the two campaigns.[2] In 2013 Jones made the European F3 Open his main Championship, and duly claimed the title with six victories.[2] Jones would also run to third in the British F3 Championship, while also competing in FR and the Macau Grand Prix.[2]
2014 saw Jones move into the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, although an impressive start to the season was undermined by a four round absence, leaving him in thirteenth in the Championship.[2]
The American Dream: 2015 - 2019[]
Indy Lights was Jones' next series of choice in 2015, with the Anglo-Emirati driver moving over to America to lead Carlin's newest racing programme.[2] Jones duly claimed third in the Championship with three victories, before claiming the Indy Lights title outright in 2016.[2] That earned Jones a scholarship drive in the IndyCar Series for 2017, with Jones scoring points on his debut.[2]
Jones would claim a single podium finish in his rookie IndyCar season, claiming third in the Indianapolis 500 on his Indy 500 debut.[2] He remained in IndyCar for 2018, although while he scored two podiums, he was unable to match his Indy exploits from the season before.[2] As a result Jones was only able to complete a partial season in 2019, skipping all of the Speedway races bar the Indy 500 due to contracts with other drivers.[2] Furthermore, Jones would injure his hand in an accident at the start of the season, but would race without complications.[2]
DTM History[]
Jones signed up to join the 2020 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Audi supported privateers Team WRT, partnering Jonathan Aberdein and fellow rookie Fabio Scherer.[1]
