Edoardo Mortara (born 12 January 1987 in Geneva, Romandy, Switzerland) a Swiss-Italian racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2011 and 2018.[1] A former factory driver for Audi before transferring to Mercedes, Mortara would come closest to winning the DTM Championship in 2016, finishing as runner-up to Marco Wittmann on the final day.[2]
Mortara was first brought into the DTM in 2011, with Audi signing and placing him in Team Rosberg for the season alongside Filipe Albuquerque.[3] The Italian racer would have a steady debut season, improving throughout the season to claim two podium finishes late in the year, before ultimately finishing in ninth in the Championship.[4]
Retained by Audi and Team Rosberg for 2012 Mortara would again improve, claiming two race victories as he climbed to fifth in the Championship.[5] However, his momentum and form would collapse during the 2013 campaign, with just three points during the season seeing him slump to 21st in the Championship.[6]
Regardless, Mortara was given a full factory seat at ABT Sportsline for 2014, and would subsequently return to the podium, before ending the season in fifth in the Championship.[7] 2015 would see the Italian registered racer entertain a brief hope of a title bid, claiming his third race win en-route to fourth in the Championship.[8]
2016 saw Mortara complete a sustained bid for the title, and would ultimately finish as runner-up to Wittmann on the final day.[2] Yet, the Italian racer would transfer his colours at the end of the 2016 campaign, instead moving to Mercedes amid a move into the FIA Formula E Championship.[9]
Mortara would have a quiet debut season with Mercedes, only claiming one podium finish as he slipped to fourteenth in the Championship.[10] A stronger 2018 campaign saw Mortara secure two more race victories en-route to sixth in the Championship, although he would lose his DTM seat when Mercedes withdrew at the end of the season.[1]
Background[]
Mortara's career began, like many in the DTM, as a child in karting, before a step into his first car racing in 2006, taking part in the Italian Formula Renault Championship.[11] Fourth place earned him a chance in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2007, where two wins earned him the 'Rookie of the Year' honour and eighth in the final standings.[11] He also took part in his first Macau Grand Prix (a unique Formula 3 event staged in Macau), finishing in tenth.[11]
Similarly, in 2008, Mortara took part in the same events, finishing as runner-up in both, before he got an offer to compete in the GP2 Series, leading to serious hopes of getting himself into Formula One.[12] It was to be an eventful campaign for the Italian, although he returned to take victory at the Macau Grand Prix that year at his third attempt.[11] 2010 saw him clinch the Euro Series title on his return to the championship, before an offer to drive in the DTM came in Audi, alongside occasional appearances in GT Championships.[12]
DTM History[]
Mortara first became an Audi driver in time for the start of the 2011 Championship, where he twice stood on the podium (at the rounds at Brands Hatch and Oschersleben).[12][3] Ninth overall was a strong performance for a rookie, with Audi renewing his contract for 2012.[12] It proved to be a strong move, as Mortara took victory at the Red Bull Ring in June, before claiming the second in August at Zandvoort. His efforts earned him fifth in the Championship, with Team Rosberg taking on Mortara for a third year in 2013.[12]
RS5 Runner[]
Audi's switch to the RS5 DTM did not go well for Mortara, as a combination of luck and poor pace earned him just three points over the course of the season.[12] Yet, he was drafted into the main ABT Sportsline team in 2014 despite this run, and responded solidly.[12] Two further podiums and a series of strong performances earned him fifth place once more in the championship, although his tally of 68 was significantly less than his 82 achieved in 2012.[12]
Continuing with Abt in 2015, Mortara's campaign started brightly at the Hockenheimring that kicked off the season.[8] He left the circuit at the head of the championship with a five point margin over Mattias Ekström, despite not winning either of the two races.

Mortara's full results from his 114 starts in the DTM are outlined in a series of tables below.
