Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michael Otto Antal Bahnam Leonhard von Habsburg-Lothringen (born 21 June 1997 in Salzburg, Austria), is an Austrian racing driver who competes for Audi Sport Team WRT in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship.[1] Known alternately as Ferdinand von Habsburg, Habsburg made his DTM debut at the start of the 2019 season, joining Aston Martin and R-Motorsport II for the campaign.[2]
von Habsburg's maiden DTM campaign was a rather anonymous one, with the Austrian racer hampered by the fact that the Aston Martin Vantage DTM was in its first season of competition.[3] As a result, von Habsburg only claimed two points finishes during the campaign, although did enough to secure a seat for the 2020 season.[3]
Away from racing, von Habsburg is the heir apparent to the House of Habsburg, the former ruling dynasty of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and holds the unofficial honorific titles of Imperial and Royal Archduke of Austria.
Background[]
von Habsburg began his career at the age of fourteen in karting, and would compete until the end of the 2013 season.[4] In 2014 von Habsburg would enter the sub 1.6 class of the Formula Renault NEC, claiming four podiums to secure fourth in the Championship.[4] He duly progressed to the full 2.0 class for 2015, claiming eighteenth, while also running to eleventh in the Toyota Racing Series.[4]
Rapid Runnings: 2016 - 2018[]
2016 saw von Habsburg compete in a variety of series, including the NEC, TRS, Euroformula Open and the Spanish Formula 3 Championship.[4] He would ultimately finish second in Euroformula Open and third in Spanish F3, while also claiming two wins to secure fourth in the TRS.[4] For 2017 Habsburg would make the FIA Formula 3 European Championship his main programme, securing one win and seventh in the Championship, before almost claiming victory in the Macau Grand Prix at the end of the season.[4]
European F3 remained von Habsburg's main programme in 2018, although he would also debut in the International GT Open and the w:c:motorsport:24 Hours of Daytona, claiming fifth in the latter.[4] Ultimately 2018 would be a quiet campaign for von Habsburg after his Daytona debut, with the Austrian racer only claiming thirteenth in European F3.[4]
DTM History[]
von Habsburg would get his DTM call-up ahead of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, signing up to partner Daniel Juncadella for the full campaign at R-Motorsport II.[2] His debut would be a rather poor one however, with a mechanical issue forcing von Habsburg to retire after just two laps of racing, having qualified at the back of the field.[5] He would also qualify at the back of the field for the second race, although a quiet race saw the Austrian racer secure his first race finish in thirteenth.[6]
Rookie Rumbles: 2019[]
von Habsburg enjoyed a better run in the 2019 Zolder Race 1, with the Austrian racer fighting to his first points finish after a well picked tyre strategy.[7] Yet, in the second race von Habsburg's luck would desert him, with the Austrian retiring while running on the outskirts of the top ten with an engine failure.[8] Two pointless races in Misano would follow, before Habsburg claimed a bruising point at the 2019 Norisring Race 1, having fought with stablemate Jake Dennis throughout.[9]
That would, however, be that for von Habsburg's season, for the Austrian racer would fail to threaten the points at all for the rest of the campaign.[9] Indeed, the closest von Habsburg would come to scoring came at the 2019 Brands Hatch Race 2, with the Austrian racer battling to eleventh from the back of the field.[10] He would also be beset by engine failures at the Lausitzring and 2019 Hockenheim Finale Race 1, the latter being enough to cause him to miss the race entirely.[11]
von Habsburg would end the 2019 season with a run to eleventh in the 2019 Hockenheim Finale Race 2, which left him on three points and eighteenth in the Championship.[3]
WRT Wrangler: 2020[]
Despite his issues in his rookie campaign, von Habsburg would secure a seat for the 2020 season, joining Audi customer team Team WRT as their lead driver.[1]
