Frank Stippler (born 9 April 1975 in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2005 and 2006.[1] A long-standing member of the Audi factory driver roster, Stippler would get two full seasons in the DTM before being deployed as a driver for Audi's customer GT3 teams.[2]
Stippler's DTM career began in 2005, when Audi placed the German racer, then part of their development squad, alongside Rinaldo Capello at Joest Racing.[3] A quiet season saw Stippler achieve a best finish of fifth at the season finale in Hockenheim, leaving him in fourteenth in the Championship.[4]
The 2006 season saw Stippler move across to the returning Team Rosberg effort, partnering Timo Scheider as he too returned to the Series.[1] Unfortunately for Stippler he would struggle to establish himself as a regular point scorer, only managing a single points finish before the end of the season.[5]
After leaving the DTM, Stippler served as a member of Audi's customer racing programme, racing in various GT3 based series on behalf of the German marque.[2] Stippler would notably go on to secure three overall victories at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, as well as multiple titles in the Nürburgring Endurance Series.[2]
Background[]
Stippler began his career in karting, before moving up to compete in local car racing events through until the 1997 season.[2] That season saw Stippler join the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany, finishing eighth, while also debuting in the Porsche Supercup.[2] 1998 saw Stippler complete a second campaign in the German Carrera Cup, finishing fourth win one victory.[2]
Porsche Performer: 1999 - 2004[]
A third season of the German Carrera Cup saw Stippler slip back to seventh in the Championship, before a run to second in the 2000 season with a single victory.[2] In 2001 Stippler would split his attention between the German Cup and the Supercup, although success was difficult to find in either.[2] The 2002 season saw Stippler focus solely on the German Cup once again, and would see the German youth sweep to the runner-up spot once again.[2]
For 2003 Stippler moved into the Supercup full time, and was duly rewarded with four victories and the Championship title, sixteen points clear of Wolf Henzler in second.[2] The German youth would also sweep to the German Carrera Cup title with three wins, before sitting out the majority of the 2004 season, barring an outing in the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Audi, finishing fourth.[2]
DTM History[]
Stippler joined the Audi development team ahead of the 2005 season, and was duly found a seat in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for the 2005 campaign.[3] The German manufacturer duly placed him in Joest Racing's effort for the season, with Stippler partnered with Rinaldo Capello in their secondary pair of A4 DTMs.[3]
Quiet Conclusions: 2005[]
Rosberg Runner: 2006[]
The 2006 season saw Stippler move over to the returning Team Rosberg team after the withdrawal of Joest from the DTM.[1]
Post-DTM Career[]
Stippler left the DTM at the end of 2006, and would spend the 2007 season in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, before a campaign with Porsche in the ADAC GT Masters in 2008.[2] In 2009 Stippler joined Audi's GT3 driver roster, and would primarily compete in the VLN for the next decade, winning the series title four times in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.[2] That run would also see Stippler secure three outright wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Audi.[2]
Elsewhere, Stippler would compete in the ADAC GT Masters, as well as the Intercontinental GT Challenge, GT World Challenge Europe and various other one-off races in GT3 spec machinery.[2]
