Harrison Newey (born 25 July 1998 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England) is a British racing driver who competed in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters with Audi Sport Team WRT.[1] A veteran of the Japanese Super Formula series, Newey would complete the full 2020 season after being drafted in to replace Ed Jones on the eve of the season.[2]
Background[]
Newey began his racing career at the age of eight, racing through the ranks of karting to the CIK-FIA International Super Cup in 2013.[3] 2014 saw Newey move into his first race car series, taking part in the Winter edition of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship.[3] The Brit ended the campaign in ninth, while also making a couple of appearances in the French F4 Championship as well.[3]
Open-Wheel Hopes[]
2015 was Newey's first full season of racing in F4, with the Brit competing in both the BRDC and ADAC F4 Championships.[3] Newey had a more successful campaign in the BRDC series, claiming two wins and second in the Championship, earning him a seat in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for 2016.[3] Newey would ultimately have a fairly quiet maiden campaign in F3, while also taking on the MRF Challenge in Asia.[3]
Newey stayed in both MRF and F3 for 2017, winning the former with seven wins out of sixteen races.[3] F3 was less successful, with Newey finish mid-table, before making the jump to sports cars at the end of the season.[3] Indeed, Newey would make a triumphant jump to the Asian Le Mans Series, claiming the 2017/18 title alongside Thomas Laurent and Stéphane Richelmi.[3]
Sportscar Sanctuary[]
Newey moved into sports car full time in 2018, taking on the World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series, as well as the Asian Le Mans Series.[3] Another strong season saw Newey claim second in the ALMS, with further point scoring finishes in WEC and ELMS, before moving back to single seaters in 2019.[3]
DTM History[]
Newey would be offered the chance to enter the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters on the eve of the disrupted 2020 season, after Ed Jones pulled out of his DTM commitments due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[1] Newey duly took over the #10 Audi Sport Team WRT entry for the 2020 season, with the Brit joining the series ahead of the season opening 2020 Spa Race 1.[1]
