Hubert Haupt (born 30 April 1969 in Munich, Bavaria, West Germany) is a German racing driver who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship as both a driver and a team owner.[1] The owner of the Haupt Racing Team, Haupt would make his DTM return during the 2021 season having previously competed in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the reincarnated DTM in 2001.[2]
Background[]
Haupt's career began in karting, with the German youth competing across West Germany and later Europe until the 1990 season when Haupt moved into touring cars.[3] In 1991 Haupt joined the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft with Audi, claiming one podium en-route to fifteenth in the Championship.[3] A disappointing second season saw Haupt only claim one point as he slipped to 23rd in the Championship, prompting a move to the United States for 1993.[3]
Breaks and Endurance: 1993 - 2000[]
For 1993 Haupt entered the Indy Lights series in the US, finishing fourteenth after nine appearances.[3] A return to Germany followed in 1994 as Haupt entered the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and the Porsche Supercup, finishing seventh in the latter.[3] After that, Haupt endured a four year break from motorsport, as funding and other commitments forced him to step away from the cockpit.[3]
1999 saw Haupt make a sensational return to racing, claiming a class victory in his debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona despite four years out of a race car.[3] He would go on to make another appearance in the ALMS that season, while also completing a five race programme in the FIA GT series.[3] A repeat programme for Haupt would follow in 2000, with Haupt claiming one win in FIA GT in the GT2 class.[3]
DTM History[]
Haupt was approached to make a return to the reincarnated DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship ahead of the 2001 season, when Euroteam expanded to become a two-car effort with Opel.[2] The German racer would duly partner fellow DTM rookie Alain Menu for the campaign, although would be out-paced by the Swiss racer at the opening round in Hockenheim.[4]
Self-Employed Embrace: 2021[]
For the 2021 season Haupt would return to the DTM paddock, albeit in the role of a team owner as the Haupt Racing Team joined the series to run two Mercedes-AMG GT3-Evos for the season.[5] However, after watching employees Maximilian Götz and Vincent Abril put in a good performance at the season opening Monza round, Haupt secured a third Mercedes-AMG GT3 car to supplement the squad.[1] On 13 July Haupt announced that he would be entering a third car for himself at the Nürburgring, marking his first DTM race in almost two decades.[1]
Post-DTM Career=[]
Haupt's post-DTM career began with a switch to the rival V8Star Germany series, claiming twentieth after six appearances.[3] After sitting out the 2003 season Haupt raced in the Mini Challenge Germany in 2004, before a partial campaign in the French GT Championship as well as the FIA GT series in the GT1 class.[3] Three more partial campaigns in the Mini Challenge Germany would follow for Haupt, before a return to the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany in 2009.[3]
A German Gentleman: 2013 - 2020[]
Haupt's racing career would be intermittent after 2009, with the German racer only competing in one-off races from 2013 onward primarily with Black Falcon.[3] In 2015 Haupt won the 24H Dubai overall at the start of the season, with Haupt going on to become a more regular figure in the paddock of the Blancpain GT Series as an AM driver.[3] 2018 saw Haupt finish second in the Silver class of Blancpain, a feat he would repeat in 2019, before finishing in second in the GTWCE with his own Haupt Racing Team squad with Mercedes.[3]
