Jake Dennis (born 16 June 1995 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, UK) is a British racing driver, who competed in the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Aston Martin R-Motorsport I.[1] A veteran of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Dennis' maiden DTM campaign was a rather anonymous one, although he delivered the joint best result for Aston Martin in their only campaign as a manufacturer.[2]
Background[]
Dennis began his career in karting at the age of ten, before progressing through the ranks until the end of 2010.[3] For 2011 Dennis would move into the InterSteps Championship, claiming the title, while also getting a run at the Formula Renault UK Finals Series at the end of the season.[3] That led him into a seat with Fortec Motorsport in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and Formula Renault 2.0 NEC in 2012, claiming the title in the latter.[3]
Single-Seater Starlet: 2012 - 2017[]
Dennis' performance in 2012 saw him nominated, and ultimately win, the 2012 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, becoming the youngest ever winner.[3] The Brit would subsequently spend 2013 in the two aforementioned Formula Renault Series, while also securing funding to race in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.[3] Dennis duly made his F3 debut in 2014, claiming ninth in the Championship having steadily improved across the season.[3]
2015 saw Dennis again improve in European F3, sweeping to six victories and third in the Championship after a switch to Prema Powerteam.[3] He duly switched to the GP3 Series for 2016, while also getting a chance to drive in the World Endurance Championship in the LMP2 class.[3] His maiden GP3 Season ended with two race wins and fourth in the Championship, although his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut ended with a retirement.[3]
GT Gains: 2017 - 2019[]
For 2017 Dennis would move away from single-seater racing, although he would start the season in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, before switching to the Blancpain GT Series with Team WRT.[3] A quiet season saw Dennis fail to challenge for any titles, although he would secure an Audi supported campaign in the ADAC GT Masters for 2018.[3]
DTM History[]
Dennis was signed up to join the new Aston Martin DTM programme ahead of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, partnering 2010 Champion Paul di Resta for the season.[1] The Brit would qualify well for his debut race in Hockenheim, although he would slide down the order during the race and out of the points.[4] His second race would be a more impressive one, as Dennis rose from last on the grid to finish eleventh.[5]
Aston Ambitions: 2019[]
Dennis' next race in Zolder was more disappointing, as a mechanical failure left him stranded in pit-in after running outside of the points.[6] Yet, Dennis would bounce back in the Sunday Race, battling his way up to sixth in the race.[2] Two anonymous races for Dennis would following Misano, before claiming his second points finish of the season in the 2019 Norisring Race 1, finishing ninth after a race long battle at the lower-end of the top ten.[7]
Two more quiet runs for Dennis would follow in the next two rounds, before two more retirements followed in the next race in Assen.[8] A collision with Timo Glock at the start of his home race would cause another retirement for Dennis, after the Brit had claimed his best grid slot of the season since the opening round.[9] Yet, he would once again bounce back to claim two more points in the second race at Brands Hatch, having climbed from seventeenth to nineteenth.[10]
Dennis would have a quiet run to the end of the season, with a series of runs outside of the points, while also suffering two more retirements due to mechanical issues.[11] However, the Brit would end the season strongly with a run to eighth place at the 2019 Hockenheim Finale Race 2, putting him in seventeenth in the Championship with seventeen points.[12]
Dennis was expected to be retained for the 2020 season, although he was left without a seat after Aston Martin cancelled their programme.[13]
