Jamie Green (born 14 June 1982 in Leicester, Leicestershire, UK) is a British racing driver, who competes in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Audi Sport Team Rosberg.[1][2] Wielding #53 as his race number, Green has come close to winning the Championship multiple times, with a best finish of second in 2015.[3]
Green made his DTM debut in 2005, having been signed up by Mercedes to join their customer team Persson Motorsport after winning the 2004 Formula 3 Euro Series.[4] A strong rookie campaign would see Green claim two podium finishes, leaving him in sixth in the Championship as the best rookie in the field.[5]
Promoted to the factory HWA Team for 2006, Green would partner Bernd Schneider for the season, claiming three more podium finishes en-route to fifth in the Championship.[6] For 2007 the Brit was moved to the secondary HWA entry alongside Mika Häkkinen, and duly claimed his maiden victory at the 2007 Barcelona Race, moving into fourth in the Championship.[7]
Placed back alongside Schneider for the 2008 season, Green would claim two more race victories, but would again finish fourth in the Championship.[8] In 2009 the British ace would slip to seventh in the Championship after moving back to Persson Motorsport alongside Susie Stoddart, although he did add to his win tally with victory at the Norisring.[9]
2010 saw Green move back up to sixth in the Championship, having again won the race at the Norisring.[10] Returning to HWA Team to partner Ralf Schumacher for 2011, Green would claim fifth in the Championship claiming one win.[11]
Third in the Championship for Green would follow for 2012, having again partnered Schumacher for the season.[12] Yet, for 2013 Green would leave Mercedes to join the factory Audi squad ABT Sportsline, partnering Mattias Ekström, although the Brit would slump to eleventh in the Championship having failed to win a race.[13]
Moved to Audi's customer outfit Team Rosberg, Green would partner Nico Müller in 2014, although he would only muster tenth in the Championship.[14] Yet, Green would bounce back to challenge for the Championship in 2015, ultimately finishing as runner-up having claimed four race wins.[15]
Another strong season for Green would follow in 2016, although he would ultimately fail to challenge for the title as he claimed third.[16] In 2017 Green would get a new teammate in the form of René Rast, and duly challenged for the Championship against his teammate, but ultimately slipped to third at the Season Finale.[17]
Yet, Green's 2018 campaign would be a disappointing one, as misfortune saw him slump to eighteenth in the Championship, his worst campaign.[18] The Brit subsequently rallied back to eighth in 2019 with a single race victory, as teammate Rast charged to his second Championship crown.[19]
Background[]
After five seasons of karting in Britain, Green entered the 2001 British Formula Renault Winter Series, taking seventh.[2] His second, full season of British Formula Renault saw Green take the runner-up spot in 2002, a feat he repeated in the 2003 British Formula 3 Championship.[2] Then, in 2004, Green took the Formula 3 Euro Series title at his first attempt, with Mercedes offering him a chance in the DTM as a reward.[20]
DTM History[]
Green's debut came in 2005 at Hockenheim, where he scored points in a year old AMG-Mercedes C-Klasse DTM 2004.[20] He went on to stand on the podium twice that season, including a second place finish at the season finale.[20] He topped this in 2006, taking three podiums, including another at Hockenheim, on his way to fifth in the final standings.[20] Green also stood on the podium at his home race at Brands Hatch.[20]
Green Glory[]
2007 started with a run of mid-points finishes for Green in four of the first five races, before a strong, but hampered second half of the season.[20] The highlight for Green, however, was his double success at the final two rounds of the season, taking his first DTM victory in Barcelona and following it up with victory at the season finale at Hockenheim.[20] Those results earned him fourth overall, with 34.5 points.[20]
It was a similarly successful 2008 campaign for Green, with a further two victories coming at Mugello and the Norisring.[20] Fourth once again that season, Green moved to the Persson Motorsport team for 2009, which saw him take a second victory at the Norisring.[20] He made it a hattrick of Norisring wins in 2010 , although those would be his only two wins over his two seasons on his Persson Motorsport return.[20]
In 2011, Green returned to HWA Team, in what proved to be the final season for the Mercedes C-Class, for which he won its last race at the season finale at Hockenheim.[20] In 2012, Green established his place as the most successful DTM driver in Nuremberg, taking an unrivalled fourth victory at the Norisring.[20] This was his last race win for Mercedes in the DTM, with Green moving to Audi in 2013.[20]
Changing colours[]
Green struggled in his first two seasons with Audi, failing to get to grips with the Audi RS5 DTM until at least the eighth round of 2013.[20] However, his pace steadily improved, and by the conclusion of the 2014 season, Green was back in the top ten in the final standings, having just missed out on a fifth victory at the Norisring.[20]
After a successful testing session at Oschersleben in the pre-season for 2015, Green dominated the opening weekend in Hockenheim. Taking pole and victory in the season opening race, Green left Hockenheim in third in the title standings, although he struggled to thirteenth in the second race of the weekend.[20]
