Joel Eriksson (born 28 June 1998 in Tomelilla, Sweden) is a Swedish racing driver, who competed in the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with BMW Team RBM.[1] A factory BMW Motorsport driver, Eriksson debuted in the DTM in 2018, and would claim a single race victory in his rookie campaign.[2]
Eriksson was handed at DTM race seat after finishing as runner-up in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, with BMW placing him in Team RBM.[2] A mixed rookie season for Eriksson saw him become a semi-regular points scorer, before claiming a shock victory at the 2018 Misano Race 2.[3]
After finishing fourteenth in the 2018 Championship, BMW and Team RBM would retain Eriksson for the 2019 campaign.[1] A more difficult sophomore season for the Swede saw him claim two podiums and improve to eleventh in the Championship, although retirements and a non-start saw BMW drop him from their DTM programme for 2020.[4]
Background[]
Coming from a motorsport family, including older brother and touring car driver Jimmy Eriksson, Eriksson began karting in 2007 at the age of nine, taking multiple titles in his native Sweden.[5]
Barnstorming Beginnings: 2014 - 2015[]
In 2014, Eriksson made his single-seater debut in the ADAC Formel Masters championship with the Motopark team, then competing under the name Lotus.[6] He achieved his maiden win in the reverse grid race at the Red Bull Ring and finished fifth in the overall standings.[7]
The following year, Eriksson reunited with Motopark to contest the now rebranded ADAC Formula 4 championship.[8] Recording seven wins and after a tight battle with HTP Junior Team driver Marvin Dienst, ended the season as championship runner-up.[9][10]
Formula 3 Firestorm: 2016 - 2017[]
In 2016, Eriksson graduated to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship whilst retaining his partnership with Motopark.[11] After multiple podiums and rookie wins, he claimed his maiden win at the third race at Spa-Francorchamps on his way to fifth in the standings.[12] Eriksson also partook in the Masters of Formula 3 and Macau Grand Prix events with Motopark, taking victory in the former.[13]
Eriksson returned to the championship the following year, reuniting with Motopark.[14] There he achieved seven wins and finished championship runner-up to future McLaren Formula One driver Lando Norris and ahead of Maximilian Günther.[15] In 2018, Eriksson returned to the Formula 3 scene to contest the Macau Grand Prix with Motopark, finishing runner-up to teammate Dan Ticktum.[16]
DTM History[]
Eriksson signed up to become a BMW factory driver ahead of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and was duly placed in the BMW Team RBM team alongside Bruno Spengler for the campaign.[2] The Swede's debut came at the season opening race in Hockenheim, with Eriksson slipping from tenth to twelfth in the race.[17] Eriksson subsequently claimed an impressive third on the grid for the Second Race, although he would be denied a maiden podium finish after slipping behind Gary Paffett and Lucas Auer in the early stages.[18]
Easing Expectations: 2018[]
Eriksson's second DTM weekend would be a less spectacular one, with the Swede finishing twelfth in the first race, before being elbowed down to ninth by Edoardo Mortara while fighting for fourth with the Italian at the Lausitzring.[19] At the following race meeting at the Hungaroring, Eriksson would gamble on an ambitious tyre strategy in the first race, which faltered, before using an identical strategy in wet conditions in the Second Race, and duly improved to sixth.[20] A battling performance in the 2018 Norisring Race 1 would see Eriksson claim more points with ninth place, only to slip down to twelfth in the Second Race.[21]
Another quiet run to ninth in the 2018 Zandvoort Race 1 would follow for Eriksson, before he would go on a disappointing four race pointless run.[22] However, he would bounce back at the 2018 Misano Race 2, with the Swede sweeping to his maiden DTM victory after gambling on remaining on wet tyres on a drying circuit.[3] That, combined with a well timed Safety Car and a return of the rain, saw Eriksson emerge at the head of the field, before fending off a challenge from Mortara to secure his maiden triumph.[3]
Eriksson's form then returned to its pre-Zandvoort pattern, with the Swede bouncing between disappointing race one results, and then point scores in race two.[23] Indeed, at the 2018 Nürburgring Race 2 and 2018 Spielberg Race 2 Eriksson would score sixth and fifth respectively, and was the lead BMW driver in the latter.[24] Ninth at the season ending 2018 Hockenheim Opening Race 2 therefore left Eriksson on 72 points for the campaign, putting him in fourteenth in the Championship.[23]
Sophomore Surety: 2019[]
Eriksson was retained by BMW for the 2019 season, and would again partner Spengler for the campaign at Team RBM as the series switched to Class One rules.[1]
At the end of the season, Eriksson would leave BMW's DTM programme, although would remain as a factory driver for the 2020 season.[4]
Post-DTM career[]
After leaving the DTM Eriksson would secure a test/reserve seat in the FIA Formula E Championship with Dragon Racing, resulting in him getting run-out at the 2020 Rookie Test.[25] Eriksson would also remain as a BMW factory driver, and would secure a seat in the ADAC GT Masters with Schubert Motorsport.[26]
