Joey F. Hand (born 10 February 1979 in Sacramento, California, USA) is an American racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2012 and 2014.[1] A factory driver for BMW Motorsport throughout his time in the DTM, Hand would claim a best finish of twelfth in the Championship, before leaving to become a factory driver for Ford in the United SportsCar Championship.[2]
Hand made his debut in 2012 as one of four factory BMW drivers moved into the series for the marque's maiden campaign.[3] Partnering reigning Champion Martin Tomczyk, Hand would have a low-key debut season, claiming only two points finishes en-route to eighth in the Championship.[4]
For 2013 Hand was transferred from Team RMG to Team RBM, partnering Augusto Farfus for the campaign.[5] The American racer duly improved to twelfth in the Championship with 32 points, and claimed a best finish of fifth at the 2013 Brands Hatch Race.[6]
Remaining alongside Farfus at Team RBM for 2014, Hand would endure a more difficult season, slipping back to twentieth with eight points.[7] After that Hand would leave the DTM and BMW's racing programme, instead securing a factory seat with Ford.[8]
Background[]
Hand's career started in karting, before the American grabbed a chance in the 1998 Mazda Pro Series, taking that title in 1999.[1] After winning the Team USA Scholarship in 2000, Hand took third in the 2001 Toyota Atlantic Championship, winning the Gilles Villeneuve Award in 2002.[1] He completed a third year in Toyotas, finishing seventh in 2003, before moving to the Grand AM Series.
Two seasons in the Grand AM Series earned Hand a place in endurance racing, as he entered the American Le Mans Series in 2006 in GT2.[1] He would stay in the ALMS beyond its evolution into the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in 2014, alongside his DTM commitments, ultimately choosing the former over the latter when asked at the end of the 2014 DTM season.[1]
DTM History[]
Hand was announced as a member of BMW's new DTM outfit in the winter before their debut season of 2012.[9] Hand took until his fourth race to score a point in his BMW M3 DTM, taking ninth at the Red Bull Ring.[10] His non-scoring run then resumed until the final race of the season, where Hand finished his rookie year with eight points, and twentieth in the final standings.[10]
A stronger start to the 2013 season saw Hand obtain his highest race finish (fifth) at Brands Hatch, as he became a semi-regular point scorer.[10] But, fifth would be as good as it got for Hand, as he finished the season in twelfth overall with 32 points.[10] 2014 saw Hand match his 2012 record almost race to race, although he was forced out of the door by BMW at the end of the season, replaced by rising star Tom Blomqvist.[10]
