Kelvin van der Linde (born 20 June 1996 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa) is a South African racing driver, who competes for ABT Sportsline in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship.[1] A factory Audi driver and GT3 ace, van der Linde would make his DTM debut in 2021, joining younger brother Sheldon van der Linde in the series.[1]
Background[]
Following in the steps of uncle Etienne van der Linde, Kelvin van der Linde began his racing career in karting at the age of eight, competing in his native South Africa culminating in a run to second in the Junior Max series.[2] In 2011 van der Linde graduated to racing cars, taking the Championship in the Volkswagen Challenge South Africa in his rookie season.[2] In 2012 van der Linde claimed the title in the Volkswagen Cup South Africa, prompting the attention of VW themselves who arranged for van der Linde to move to Europe to compete in the VW Scirocco R Cup Germany.[2]
Brand Battles: 2013 - 2020[]
With backing as a VW junior driver, van der Linde would secure the title in the Scirocco Cup, becoming the Series' youngest ever winner at the age of 17.[2] In 2014 van der Linde secured a seat in the ADAC GT Masters with Abt Racing, and would duly win that Championship in partnership with René Rast.[2] That success saw van der Linde inducted into the Audi roster of factory drivers, although for 2015 van der Linde would commit to an ultimately unsuccessful defence of his GT Masters crown.[2]
A third season in GT Masters would follow for van der Linde without any success, before bouncing back to fifth in the Series in 2016.[2] 2017 also saw van der Linde compete in the Australian GT Championship, claiming two wins, as well as an outright victory at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring alongside one-off drives in the Intercontinental GT Challenge and Blancpain.[2] For 2018 van der Linde would gain even more experience in other series, with outings in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Stock Car Brazil, alongside a run to second in ADAC GT Masters and third in the Blancpain Sprint Cup.[2]
The 2019 season saw van der Linde reclaim the GT Masters' title with three victories, with the other major highlight being a run to third in class at the 24 Hours of Daytona.[2] Fourth in GT Masters would follow for van der Linde in a condensed 2020 campaign, with the South African racer also making appearances in the GTWCE and 24H Series.[2]
DTM History[]
van der Linde would be drafted into the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters pool of drivers ahead of the Series' 2021 switch to GT3 regulations, which saw Audi move from a factory team to supporting customers instead.[1] As one of Audi's most successful GT3 pilots, van der Linde's services were offered to ABT Sportsline for the 2021 season, with the South African racer placed alongside Mike Rockenfeller and Sophia Flörsch at the team.[1] van der Linde would go on to be one of the quicker Audi equipped drivers during pre-season testing, setting the best time of any Audi pilot at the 2021 Lausitzring Test.[3]
Debut Delights?: 2021[]
van der Linde made his DTM debut at the 2021 Monza Race 1, with a strong debut seeing the South African racer finish as the best of the Audi drivers in fifth after fighting for points throughout.[4] The second race, which would be on his birthday, saw van der Linde claim victory from pole position, benefitting from a revised Balance of Performance calculation that benefitted the Audi drivers.[5]
