Marcel Fässler (born 27 May 1976 in Einsiedeln, Schwyz, Switzerland) is a Swiss racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2000 and 2005.[1] A driver for both AMG-Mercedes and Opel during that period, Fässler would take five victories during his DTM career, and claim a best Championship position of third in 2003.[2]

Fässler was signed to the secondary HWA Team ahead of the 2000 season, partnering touring car veteran Klaus Ludwig with backing from Warsteiner.[1] The Swiss racer would impress on his debut, finishing both races on the podium, with four further podium finishes leaving him in fourth in the Championship.[3]

For 2001 Fässler was placed alongside Uwe Alzen in the Warsteiner squad, and would become a test driver for McLaren-Mercedes in Formula One.[4] The Swiss youth duly claimed his maiden DTM victory at Oschersleben, with a further win leaving him in fourth in the Championship.[5]

2002 would see Fässler again partner Alzen for the season, again with Warsteiner backing on his car.[6] Once again, Fässler would claim two victories, en-route to fourth, again, in the Championship hunt.[7]

Remaining with HWA and Mercedes for 2003, Fässler was partnered by Jean Alesi for the season, using the latest model of AMG-Mercedes CLK-DTM.[2] A title pretender until the penultimate round, Fässler would finish third in the Championship with a single win, missing out on the title by eleven points.[8]

A surprise move to the Opel team followed for 2004, with Fässler placed alongside 2002 Champion Laurent Aïello in one of their two factory teams.[9] However, a difficult season would see Fässler fail to record a podium finish, slipping to ninth in the Championship.[10]

Retained by Opel for 2005 but moved across to Team Holzer, Fässler, partnering Heinz-Harald Frentzen, would again fail to claim a podium finish.[11] As a result, Fässler would call time on his DTM career, instead switching to sports cars in 2006.[12]

After leaving the DTM Fässler would have a successful sportscar career, claiming the 2012 World Endurance Championship for Audi, while also winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times.[13]

Background[]

Fässler began his career in karting, before moving into single-seater racing in 1995, entering the Formula Renault Campus France series, finishing third.[13] Moving into the full French national F3 Championship for 1996, Fässler again finished third, before slipping to eleventh in the 1997 edition of the series.[13] 1998 saw Fässler improve to fourth in French F3, while also appearing in the BRDC British F3 Championship, before running to second in the 1999 German Formula 3 Championship.[13]
