Marco Wittmann (born 24 November 1989 in Fürth, Bavaria, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competes in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for BMW Team RMG.[1] A two time Champion of the DTM in 2014 and 2016, Wittmann entered the 2020 season as one of the favourites for the title.[2]

Wittmann joined the DTM in 2013 after becoming a factory BMW driver in 2012, with the Bavarian marque placing him in Team MTEK alongside Timo Glock.[3] A strong rookie season for Wittmann saw the German youth claim a podium finish as well as a pole position, leaving him in eighth.[4]

BMW moved Wittmann to their main Team RMG outfit for 2014, partnering him with Maxime Martin for the campaign.[5] The German racer would subsequently march to the title with four victories, including his first in the DTM at Hockenheim, beating Mattias Ekström by 50 points to claim the Championship.[6]

Wittmann's first title defence was not a successful one, with the German racer only claiming one victory in 2015 en-route to sixth in the Championship.[7] However, Wittmann, then partnered with Timo Glock, would bounce back strongly in 2016 to reclaim the title, securing three victories to narrowly beat Edoardo Mortara on the final day in Hockenheim.[2]

For 2017 Wittmann would get a new teammate in the form of Augusto Farfus, although the German racer would again falter in his title defence, slipping to fifth in the Championship.[8] Retained for 2018, Wittmann would muster a brief title challenge after a strong mid-season, but ultimately faded to fourth at the finale.[9]

2019 saw BMW partner Wittmann with Bruno Spengler for the campaign, with the German racer again assembling a title bid after a strong start to the season.[10] However, Wittmann would be blown away with the rest of the field by eventual Champion René Rast, falling to third in the Championship come the end of the season.[11]

Background[]

After 10 full seasons of karting from 1996, Wittmann stepped up to the Formula BMW Germany Championship in 2007, taking fifth in his debut year.[12] This result enabled him to enter the Formula BMW World Final at the end of the season, finishing the one-off event as runner-up.[12] He would finish runner-up in the Formula BMW Europe Championship the following year, before he was given a chance at the next level: the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009.[12]

His 2009 campaign saw him finish sixteenth in the championship, although his determination over the following season saw a major improvement.[13] A first victory in the Euro Series, combined with strong results throughout the year saw Wittmann miss out on the championship to Edoardo Mortara. In 2011, Wittmann once again missed out on the title as runner-up, beaten that time by Roberto Merhi. Then, in 2012, BMW approached and inducted Wittmann into their DTM programme, with Wittmann becoming their main test driver.[12]

DTM History[]

Wittmann, after a year of testing for BMW, Wittmann became a full DTM driver in 2013, joining BMW Team MTEK.[3] A second place at the Red Bull Ring demonstrated Wittmann's pace, as his consistent point finishes earned him eighth in his rookie season in the final standings.[13] A move to BMW Team RMG for 2014, however, proved to be a significant one, as Wittmann shocked the DTM paddock early on.[13]

Victories at Hockenheim, Hungaroring, his favourite Red Bull Ring, and the Nürburgring handed Wittmann the championship with two rounds to go at the Lausitzring.[12] His tally of 156 was 50 more than Mattias Ekström in second, one of the largest margins since the DTM was reborn in 2000.[13] In 2015, having stayed with BMW Team RMG, Wittmann aimed to become the first driver to successfully defend his crown since Timo Scheider in 2009.[14]
