Markus Winkelhock (born 13 June 1980 in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Team ABT.[1] The son of fellow DTM racer Joachim Winkelhock, Winkelhock returned to the DTM for the first time in more than a decade in 2021 when he raced in place of an absent Sophia Flörsch.[1]
Winkelhock first raced in the DTM in 2004, as Persson Motorsport promoted the German youth from an impressive maiden campaign in the Formula 3 Euro Series.[2] Winkelhock would ultimately fail to score in a year old AMG-Mercedes, before moving on to compete in Formula Renault 3.5, and later Formula One.[3]
Winkelhock returned to the DTM fold in 2007, with first Audi Sport Team ABT and then Kolles Racing hiring the German racer for part of the season.[4] Winkelhock would once again fail to score in any of his seven outings, completing half the season with Kolles, finishing nineteenth in the Championship.[5]
For 2008 Winkelhock would move to Audi Sport Team Rosberg, and finally secured his maiden points finish in the second race of the season.[6] Further point scores saw Winkelhock finish eleventh in the Championship with six points, earning him another season with Team Rosberg.[7]
2009 saw Winkelhock narrowly miss out on his first podium finish at the opening round in Hockenheim, a result he would match later at the Nürburgring.[8] Come the end of the season, however, Winkelhock would only secure one more points finish, leaving him in tenth in the Championship.[9]
Winkelhock was retained by Team Rosberg for the 2010 season, although a difficult season saw the German racer fail to score until the penultimate race of the season.[10] Indeed, despite matching his best finish in Adria, Winkelhock would end the season in twelfth in the Championship, prompting him to move away from the DTM at the end of the campaign.[3]
After more than a decade away from the DTM racing in GT3 cars, Winkelhock returned to the series in 2021 to stand in for Sophia Flörsch at the round at the Nürburgring.[1]
Background[]
Winkelhock began his racing career in karting, although it was only in 1998 that the German youth appeared in single seaters, joining Formula König, a series that his uncle Thomas Winkelhock had won in 1989.[3] Finishing as runner-up, Winkelhock moved into the Formula Renault Germany in 1999, finishing fourth, before moving into the Eurocup and FR Italy in 2000.[3] That campaign saw Winkelhock claim sixth in the Eurocup with one victory, resulting in another move for the 2001 season.[3]
F3 Fortunes: 2001 - 2003[]
For 2001 Winkelhock secured a full season seat in the German Formula 3 Championship, claiming two wins and fifth in the Championship.[3] His sophomore season in German F3 saw Winkelhock secure two more wins, although he slipped down to seventh in the standings, before staying with the series as it became the Formula 3 Euro Series.[3] One win for Winkelhock in the new F3 series saw the German racer finish in fourth in the championship, earning him the attention of several DTM teams.[3]
DTM History[]
Winkelhock was first approached to join the DTM ahead of the 2004 season, as Persson Motorsport hired him to partner Stefan Mücke for the campaign.[2]
Post-DTM Career[]
After leaving the DTM at the end of the 2004 season Winkelhock completed a full campaign in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, finishing third.[3] 2006 saw Winkelhock serve as a test/reserve driver for Midland F1 in Formula One, while also making one appearance in the Porsche Supercup.[3] 2007 saw Winkelhock return to the DTM, although midway through the season the German racer made his one and only appearance in F1, retiring having led the 2007 German Grand Prix.[3]
GT Stalwart: 2011 - 2020[]
In 2011 Winkelhock moved in the GT1 World Championship, claiming fifth, before winning the series in 2012 with one victory.[3] 2013 saw the German racer move into the Blancpain Endurance Series, finishing 23rd after joining the Audi roster of driers.[3] Blancpain would remain Winkelhock's main programme in both 2014 and 2015, before a move to the ADAC GT Masters followed in 2016.[3]
2017 saw Winkelhock secure the title in the Intercontinental GT Challenge alongside his runs in the GT Masters and Blancpain.[3] A title in the Pro-Am class in the Blancpain Sprint Cup would follow for Winkelhock in 2018, before a winless season followed for the German in 2019.[3] In 2020 Winkelhock only had a handful of appearances outside of a full campaign in the GT World Challenge Europe, once again failing to secure a victory.[3]
