Maro Engel (born 27 August 1985 in Munich, Bavaria, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2008 and 2011, as well as in 2017.[1] A long-standing factory driver for Mercedes across a range of championships, Engel would claim one race victory in his time in the DTM, claiming a best Championship finish of twelfth.[1]
After signing up to the Mercedes DTM programme in 2008, the Stuttgart marque would place him at Mücke Motorsport, partnering Ralf Schumacher for the campaign.[2] It proved to be a quiet maiden season for the German racer, as he failed to score any points en-route to sixteenth in the Championship.[3]
Retained by Mücke Motorsport for 2009 but getting a new teammate in the form of Mathias Lauda, Engel would have a strong start to the season, claiming a series of points finishes en-route to twelfth in the Championship.[4] A third campaign with Mücke saw Engel get another new teammate in the form of David Coulthard, although the German racer would again struggle to score points, slipping to fifteenth in the Championship.[5]
Regardless, Engel would get a fourth DTM campaign with Mücke in 2011, and his second alongside Coulthard, although the German racer's point scoring struggles continued.[6] As a result Mercedes would remove Engel from their DTM programme, instead placing him in their various GT programmes.[7]
However, after a five year absence the German racer would get a second shot at the DTM, rejoining the Mercedes programme with a seat at HWA Team.[1] A mixed campaign would see Engel again struggle to score points at every race, although he did secure his only DTM victory at the Moscow Raceway.[8]
At the end of the 2017 season Engel was again removed from the DTM, instead focusing on programmes in the FIA Formula E Championship and Blancpain GT Series.[9]
Background[]
Engel began his career in karting, before getting his first race car seat in 2001, joining the Formula BMW ADAC Championship in his native Germany.[10] Finishing third in the Formula BMW Junior Cup that year, Engel would compete for the full Formula BMW title in 2002, finishing eighth in the Championship.[10] Opel subsequently signed the youth as a development driver, and hence promoted him into the Formula 3 Euro Series.[10]
F3 Finances: 2003 - 2007[]
His maiden F3 campaign would see Engel only complete the first half of the season, before Opel pulled their backing midway through the campaign.[10] For 2004 Engel would secure a one-off race in the German F3 Championship, before getting a handful of outings in the Italian F3000 Championship in 2005.[10] For 2006 Engel secured enough funding to complete a full season in the British Formula 3 International Series, running with support from Direxiv.[10]
After claiming one win and fifth place in British F3, Mercedes signed Engel to their junior programme, and full funded his 2007 racing plans.[10] A second season in British F3 saw the German racer improve to finish as runner-up in the Championship, and prompt Mercedes to push him into their DTM programme the following year.[10]
