Martin Tomczyk (born 7 December 1981 in Rosenheim, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who won the 2011 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Audi Sport Team Phoenix.[1] A series veteran, Tomczyk would compete in the Series between 2001 and 2016, racing on behalf of both Audi and BMW during his time.[2]
Tomczyk would get his first DTM campaign in 2001, signing up alongside fellow youth Mattias Ekström to join the new Team Abt Sportsline Junior squad, finishing thirteenth in the Championship.[3] He would remain in the "Junior Team" for 2002, and duly claimed his first win at the 2002 Hockenheim Opening Qualifying Race, improving to eleventh in the Championship.[4]
2003 saw Tomczyk remain with the "Junior Team" alongside Peter Terting, although he would only claim a single point across the campaign.[5] Regardless, Tomczyk would be promoted to the full factory Abt Sportsline squad for 2004, and was reunited with Ekström to assist the Swede to the Championship title.[6]
The Ekström-Tomczyk partnership was retained for 2005, although a quiet campaign would see Tomczyk slump to thirteenth.[7] Yet, 2006 would see the German racer bounce back to fourth in the Championship, and claim his first win in four years in Barcelona.[8]
In 2007 Tomczyk would claim two more victories to emerge as a title pretender, although he would slip to third in the hunt at the end of the season.[9] 2008 saw Tomczyk slide back down the field to seventh in the Championship, as he had a mixed campaign.[10]
2009 saw Tomczyk improve to sixth in the Championship claiming a single victory, amid a run of podium finishes.[11] The Ekström-Tomczyk was then retained for a seventh and final season in 2010, although the German racer failed to score.[12]
For 2011 Tomczyk was moved across to Audi Sport Team Phoenix, and duly delivered his maiden and only DTM crown with three victories.[13] Indeed, an impressive campaign for the German racer saw Tomczyk claim podium finishes in all bar-two races, despite using a three year-old car.[13]
However, after winning the Championship Tomczyk would move to the new BMW outfit for 2012, with the German racer being placed in their factory Team RMG outfit.[14] Yet, while BMW would immediately emerge as a title pretending squad, Tomczyk would only claim a handful of podium finishes, slumping to eighth in the Championship.[14]
An awful 2013 season for Tomczyk saw him only score a single points finish, resulting in him being moved to Team Schnitzer for 2014.[15] A better season for Tomczyk saw the German racer improve to sixth in the Championship, claiming his final DTM podium finish.[16]
Retained by BMW and Team Schnitzer for 2015, Tomczyk again struggled for pace, and hence slipped back to nineteenth in the Championship.[17] Another difficult season for the German racer would follow in 2016, with the German racer calling time on his DTM career having fallen to 21st in the title hunt.[18]
Background[]
After four full seasons of karting, Tomczyk made his mark in car racing with second overall in the ADAC Formula Junior Championship in 1998.[1] In 1999, Tomczyk began his long association with BMW, winning the 1999 Portuguese Formula BMW Series, while also taking fourth in the Formula BMW ADAC Championship in Germany.[1] The year 2000 saw a move in the German Formula 3 Championship for Tomczyk, before Audi called him up to their Junior Squad in the DTM for 2001.[1]
DTM History[]
Tomczyk was quick to impress in the DTM with the Abt-Audi TT-R, setting a second place time in the qualifying race at the Nürburgring in his second DTM appearance, taking two points for his work. Following that with fourth in the race proper, Tomczyk went on to score a total of 23 points, meaning he was behind fellow Sportsline Junior racer Mattias Ekström in the final standings. Remaining in the Junior squad for 2002, Tomczyk took his maiden DTM victory at the season opening race at Hockenheim, although that would be the only highlight for him that season.
Back with the Junior squad for 2003, an even more barren season followed for Tomczyk, as the young German only scored a single point all season, having retired from four races. Yet, on his return to the main team, and armed with the brand new Audi A4 DTM, Tomczyk finally began to fulfil his promise, claiming a first podium finish at Estoril. Three further podiums (all of which were second places) followed in the second half of the 2004 season, as Tomczyk claimed fifth in the final standings.
Sportsline Stalwart[]
Tomczyk, alongside Mattias Ekström effectively formed the backbone of the Abt Sportsline team from 2005 onward, although that particular season saw Tomczyk struggle to match his previous seasons achievements. That changed in 2006, when Tomczyk finally tasted victory, taking the honours at the Barcelona meeting near the end of the season. Fourth overall meant that he was the second best Audi (after Tom Kristensen).
2007 proved to be one of Tomczyk's strongest with Audi, as he took two victories (Zandvoort and the Nürburgring) on his way to third in the championship. 2008 was a tougher year for Tomczyk, as he took only one podium all season, and would not taste victory again until the 2009 visit to the Nürburgring. His final season with Sportsline started poorly, with Tomczyk being disqualified from the Valencia meeting. He recovered to finish eighth overall, before Audi moved him to Phoenix Racing for 2011.
Phoenix from the Ashes[]
Tomczyk took to his new surroundings well, despite using an A4 that was older than he had been using for the past two seasons. Victories at the Red Bull Ring, Lausitzring and at Brands Hatch, combined with five podiums, earned Tomczyk his first DTM title. Yet, at the end of the season, Tomczyk left Audi to join the new BMW outfit for 2012, becoming their leading driver alongside Bruno Spengler.
Back where he belonged[]
Tomczyk returned to the manufacturer that had helped his junior career get off the mark, and duly rewarded them with two second place finishes during 2012. It was not a vintage year for Tomczyk, however, as he tumbled to eighth in the standings, well behind Champion Spengler. Yet, it was a disastrous 2013 campaign that caused many to question Tomczyk's future in the series, as he failed to secure a podium place all season, and only scored points in one race.
A similar pattern appeared to be unfolding in 2014, although Tomczyk was getting into the tail end of the points in the early races. His pace dramatically improved, however, after the summer break, as he took a podium at the penultimate round in Zandvoort, finishing the season in sixth overall.
2015 saw Tomczyk hit Gary Paffett (the two having had a long lasting rivalry through contact) in the opening race, an incident that ended both of their races.
Full DTM Record[]
Tomczyk's full results from his 196 starts in the DTM are outlined in a series of tables below.
