Mattias Ekström, (born 14 July 1978 in Falun, Sweden) is a Swedish racing driver, who won the 2004 and 2007 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championships, racing for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.[1] A long-term factory driver for Audi in the DTM, Ekström would establish himself as one of the greatest drivers in the post-2000 era of the DTM, finishing in the top three of the Championship seven times alongside his two title wins.[2]
Ekström signed up to join the DTM as a relatively unknown 22 year old in 2001, despite winning the STCC in his native Sweden in 1999.[3] Placed in the Team Abt Sportsline Junior team alongside Martin Tomczyk, Ekström would have an impressive rookie campaign, claiming three podium finish.[3]
For 2002 Ekström was promoted to the secondary Team Abt squad, partnering Karl Wendlinger for the season.[4] That campaign would see the Swede secure his maiden DTM victory at the 2002 Norisring Qualifying Race, with two more victories putting him in third in the Championship.[4]
A second season alongside Wendlinger would follow for Ekström in 2003, with the Swede slipping to fourth after missing out on claiming a victory.[5] However, after a promotion to the full Abt Sportsline squad, with Audi factory backing, for 2004, Ekström would charge to four victories and the Championship title, defeating Gary Paffett.[6]
Ekström's title defence in 2005 would see him claim three victories, although he would ultimately fall to 2004 rival Paffett after a season long fight.[7] A more disappointing campaign for the Swede would follow in 2006, with Ekström slipping to eighth with only one victory.[8]
Yet, one victory would be enough for Ekström to claim the 2007 title, although he would finish on the podium a further six times en-route to the crown.[9] Once again, however, Ekström would be unable to hold onto his title in 2008, slipping down to third despite claiming more points and three victories.[10]
A quiet campaign would follow for Ekström in 2009, with the Swedish racer slipping to fifth after failing to claim a win.[11] A similarly disappointing season would follow in 2010, although Ekström would add one more victory to his win tally.[12]
Ekström would bounce back in 2011, missing out on the title after claiming three victories to teammate Tomczyk.[13] The 2012 season would see the Ekström get a new teammate in the form of Timo Scheider, although the Swede would slip to sixth in the Championship.[14]
2013 saw Ekström slide down to seventh in the Championship, claiming just a single podium finish, before finishing as runner-up to Marco Wittmann in 2014.[15] That season would also see Ekström flirt with the FIA World RallyCross Championship for the first time, a fact which would impact his long-term DTM career.[15]
Regardless, Ekström would complete the full 2015 season, with two victories leaving him in third in the Championship.[16] Yet, after a difficult campaign in 2016 season Ekström would sit out the season finale in Hockenheim, instead taking part in a clashing FIA WRX Championship round that ultimately ensured that the Swede won that Championship.[17]
For 2017 Ekström would have one final major run at the Championship, losing out the René Rast on the Final Day despite claiming just one victory all campaign.[18] That, ultimately, saw Ekström call time on his DTM career to focus on running his WRX team, although he would make a one-off wildcard appearance in Hockenheim at the start of 2018.[19]
Background[]
Ekström's career began in karting at the age of 15, until getting a chance in the Renault 5 Sweden Championship in 1995.[20] He finished runner-up, before taking the title the following year, with the Swedish Touring Car Championship calling in 1997.[20] Four years in the STCC saw Ekström take the title in 1999, a season in which he also dabbled in the World Rally Championship.[20] In 2001, Ekström was approached by Audi and Abt Sportsline becoming part of their Junior Driver Programme.[1]
DTM History[]
Equipped with an Abt-Audi TT-R for the 2001 DTM Season, Ekström took seventeenth in the qualifying race, before failing to start the race proper.[1] At the Lausitzring, Ekström took his first podium, ultimately finishing 8th in the Championship.[1] He returned in 2002, claiming his first win in the qualifying race at the Norisring.[1] He took his first full win later in the season, winning the race at Zandvoort, with a strong string of results granting him third overall.[1]
Audi's Champion[]
2003 saw five podiums for Ekström, although he failed to win a race, with the qualifying races disappearing.[1] 46 points was his final tally, and fourth overall, Ekström was the best placed Audi runner as the DTM waved goodbye to the TT.[1] Yet, armed with the Audi A4 DTM in 2004, Ekström dominated the season, taking victory at Adria (Italy), Lausitzring, Zandvoort and Brno en-route to the title.[1]
Three wins in 2005, including at the Lausitzring and Brno where he won in 2004, saw Ekström as a title challenger throughout the year.[1] However, he missed out to Gary Paffett by thirteen points at the Season Finale, but was Audi's best placed driver for the third year in a row.[1] 2006 was a disappointing season for Ekström, with only one win at Brands Hatch, falling to eighth in the championship.[1]
Swedish Stalwart[]
Ekström claimed his second title in 2007 despite only winning the season opener in Hockenheim, while Martin Tomczyk took two.[1] It was his consistent podium finishes that secured the crown, including five in a row over the middle of the season.[1] In contrast, Ekström won three times in 2008 but missed out on the title, having been unable to repeat his podium run.[1]
In 2009 Ekström failed to win a race for the first time since 2003, with five podiums on his way to fifth in the Championship.[1] 2010 saw the Swede return to the top step in Valencia, repeating his fifth place from the year before.[1] His final year with the A4 saw him take three wins in 2011, finishing runner-up to Tomczyk, despite winning the same number of races.[1]
The Next Generation[]
Audi's release of the Audi RS5 DTM to replace the A4 did not go well for Ekström, as he failed to win a race.[1] Similarly, 2012 saw a poor season, with only four podiums for him over the two seasons.[1] Yet, in 2014, Ekström finally got to grips with the RS5.[1]
Two wins at the end of the season, gave Ekström second in the championship, but his retirements from the previous two caused him to miss out on the title to Marco Wittmann.[1] This new relationship with the RS5 was proved at the start of 2015, with Ekström taking his 20th career victory at the 2015 Hockenheim Opening Race 2.
