Maximilian Buhk (born 9 December 1992 in Reinbek, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Mercedes-AMG Team Mücke Motorsport.[1] A stand-in for two-time DTM Champion Gary Paffett as the British ace was busy with his Formula E commitments, Buhk arrived in the DTM as one of a number of GT3 specialists as a factory Mercedes-Benz driver.[1]
Background[]
Buhk began karting in 2004, and would compete across his native Germany and later Europe until 2010, when the German racer obtained a seat in the ADAC Formel Masters.[2] Finishing twelfth in his rookie season, Buhk would improve to ninth in Formel Masters in 2011, before switching to GT3 racing in 2012, entering the ADAC GT Masters and FIA GT3 European Championship.[2] Claiming the title in GT3 Europe, Buhk would move into the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2013, winning that title too as well as running to third in the GT Masters.[2]
HTP Hero: 2014 - 2018[]
For 2014 Buhk would remain with employers HTP Motorsport as they continued to deploy their efforts in Blancpain and GT Masters, with Buhk finishing as runner-up in the former.[2] A similar programme, with HTP switching to running Bentley GT3s, would follow in 2015, with Buhk claiming the GT3 Pro cup in the Blancpain Sprint Series as well as becoming a pseudo factory driver for the British marque.[2] A fourth successive Blancpain/GT Masters focused campaign would follow for Buhk in 2016, with the German pilot again taking the honours in Blancpain.[2]
For 2017 Buhk became a factory Mercedes driver amid HTP's switch to running the Stuttgart marque's cars, with Blancpain again forming the bulk of Buhk's plans for the season.[2] Finishing as runner-up in Blancpain, a disappointing 2018 campaign would follow for Buhk, as the German racer only claimed one race victory in the GT Masters after reducing his Blancpain commitments.[2] 2018 would also see Buhk sign up to the International GT Challenge, although in four appearances Buhk would only threaten the podium once.[2]
Mercedes Mover: 2019 - 2021[]
For 2019 Buhk would compete in IGTC, finishing third, with the German racer only making one appearance in Blancpain as well as make his debut in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in GTD.[2] A turbulent 2020 season would see Buhk only get to make a handful of appearances in the GT World Challenge Europe, while also appearing in other one-off GT3 based events.[2] 2021 saw Mercedes place Buhk in the ADAC GT Masters for the first time in three years, as well as support their customer teams in the IMSA series.[2]
DTM History[]
Buhk was unveiled as a driver in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship in the build-up to the season opening 2021 Monza Race 1, after Mercedes affirmed that Gary Paffett would priorities his Formula E reserve role over his DTM seat.[1] Taking over the #18 Mercedes-AMG GT3-Evo run by Mercedes-AMG Team Mücke Motorsport, Buhk would claim a spot in the top ten in qualifying, before climbing to seventh in his debut race benefitting from a clever pit strategy by being the last driver to stop.[3] The Second Race saw Buhk battle against an unfavourable Balance of Performance adjustment, meaning he would finish down the order in thirteenth.[4]
