Michael Ammermüller (born 14 February 1986 in Pocking, Bavaria, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with SSR Performance.[1] A multiple Porsche Supercup Champion and long-term Porsche GT3 driver, Ammermüller would make his DTM debut during the 2021 season as a guest driver as SSR Performance analysed a future entry into the Series.[1]
Background[]
Ammermüller began his career in karting, before entering single-seater racing in 2004, joining the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Germany.[2] Finishing third in the latter series, Ammermüller focused on the Italian version of Formula Renault in 2005 alongside another campaign in the Eurocup, with the German youth going on to finish as runner-up in both.[2] Those results earned Ammermüller the attention of Red Bull, who duly hired the German racer as their test/reserve driver in Formula One, and secured him a full season seat in the GP2 Series.[2]
Formula Dreams: 2006 - 2009[]
The 2006 season saw Ammermüller claim one GP2 Series win en-route to eleventh in the Championship, earning him a second season in the Series.[2] However, after tangling with Ernesto Viso in the sixth race of the season, Ammermüller would leave GP2, instead ending the season in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, while also losing his Red Bull backing.[2] The following two seasons saw Ammermüller compete in the A1 Grand Prix series for Team Germany, finishing eighth in 2007-08, while also running to third in the 2008 edition of the International Formula Master championship.[2]
Supercup Supreme: 2010 - 2020[]
In 2010 Ammermüller moved across to the world of sportscar racing, taking a seat in the ADAC GT Masters and FIA GT3 European Championship, finishing twelfth in the former.[2] After a second season in GT Masters in 2011, which saw Ammermüller claim his first win in a GT3 car, Ammermüller moved into the Porsche Supercup for 2012, finishing sixth in his rookie season.[2] Third place in the Supercup would follow for the German racer in 2013, 2014 and 2015, with Ammermüller also securing second in the German edition of the Porsche Carrera Cup in 2014.[2]
2016 was a more difficult season for Ammermüller as the German racer failed to finish in the top three in either the Supercup or Carrera Cup, although he would bounce back in 2017 by claiming his first Supercup title.[2] Ammermüller successfully defended his Supercup crown in both 2018 and 2019, before moving on to race in the ADAC GT Masters in 2020.[2] Partnering Christian Engelhart, Ammermüller would go on to claim his first ADAC GT Masters title by nine points.[2]
DTM History[]
Ammermüller was selected to drive the SSR Performance entry ahead of their guest appearance at the 2021 Nürburgring Race 1, the fourth round of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship.[1] Making history as the first driver to compete in a Porsche in the DTM, Ammermüller's debut would be cut short on lap six as the #92 Porsche sustained too much damage to continue.[3] The Second Race saw Ammermüller qualify an impressive fourth and elbow his way into third at the start, only for a mechanical issue to cause him to retire mid-race.[4]
