Mike Rockenfeller (born 31 August 1983 in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany) known in the DTM paddock as Rocky, is an entrant in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, competing for Audi Sport Team Phoenix.[1] The 2013 DTM Champion, Rockenfeller has been a factory Audi driver throughout his DTM career, having initially debuted in 2007.[2]
Rockenfeller was placed in Team Rosberg's squad for his maiden DTM campaign in 2007, and would end the season with a single podium and in twelfth in the Championship.[2] Retained for 2008, Rockenfeller would improve to eleventh in the Championship, although he would fail to claim a podium finish.[3]
A more difficult third season for Rockenfeller would follow in 2009, with the German racer only claiming two points finishes as he slipped to fourteenth in the Championship.[4] As a result, Audi moved him to Phoenix Racing alongside Alexandre Prémat for 2010, with the German racer improving to seventh in the Championship having returned to the podium for the first time in three seasons.[5]
Moving to the factory ABT Sportsline squad for 2011 alongside Mattias Ekström, Rockenfeller would secure his maiden DTM victory at Zandvoort.[6] Indeed, 2011 would be Rockenfeller's strongest season to that point, barring having to miss a race after a heavy accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans left him unable to race for a couple of weeks.[7]
2012 saw Rockenfeller move back to Phoenix Racing, partnering Timo Scheider for the season, with the younger German racer claiming fourth in the Championship.[8] He would again improve in 2013, with two victories and three further podium finishes leaving Rockenfeller as the Champion, 26 clear of second placed Augusto Farfus.[9]
Rockenfeller's title defence was not a successful one, however, with the German racer slipping to third having failed to win a race.[10] He would slip further down the field in 2015 to tenth in the Championship, although he did claim another race victory at the 2015 Moscow Raceway Race 2.[11]
A difficult season would follow for Rockenfeller, with the German racer slumping to nineteenth in the 2016 title hunt, failing to finish on the podium.[12] He would bounce back to fourth in 2017, adding a fifth victory to his account amid a strong end to the season.[13]
2018 saw Rockenfeller only claim two podium finishes, resulting in him dropping to eleventh in the Championship.[14] However, Rockenfeller would bounce back to fourth in 2019, claiming another race win amid six podium finishes.[15]
Background[]
Rockenfeller started his racing career in karting, before taking fourth in the Formula König Championship in 2001.[16] In three seasons in the Porsche Carrera Cup, a title he took on his final attempt, before moving to the FIA GT Championship in 2005.[16] Victory in the GT2 Category in the FIA GT Series and on his Le Mans 24 Hour début attracted interest from Audi, with Rocky becoming part of their Le Mans and DTM programmes from 2007.[16]
DTM History[]
Entered by Team Rosberg in a year old Audi A4 DTM in 2007, Rockenfeller took his first podium in his second race at Oschersleben.[17] Rocky would score points in Mugello and Barcelona on his way to twelfth in the championship, scoring eleven points.[17] Yet, in 2008, Rocky scored fewer points and failed to secure a podium finish, despite taking eleventh in the championship.[17]
In his final year with Team Rosberg, Rocky again could only manage two points finishes during the 2009 season, before moving to Phoenix Racing for 2010, taking his 2008 Audi A4 with him.[17] It was a better season for Rocky, taking a second podium finish in Hockenheim, with 22 points enough for him to take seventh in the title standings.[17] A move to ABT Sportsline followed for 2011 saw Rocky take his first DTM victory at Zandvoort, although he missed the Lausitzring meeting, replaced by Audi legend Tom Kristensen after an accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier that month.[17]
Fighting Phoenix[]
After ending the 2011 season in sixth, Rockenfeller returned to Phoenix Racing for 2012, debuting the new Audi A5 DTM.[17] Two podiums saw Rockenfeller lead Audi's title challenge that season, taking 85 points on his way to fourth in the series.[17] Then, in 2013, Rocky wrote his place in DTM history, taking victories at Brands Hatch and Moscow.[17] 142 points was his end of season total, as Rocky took the title by almost 30 points over Augusto Farfus.[17]
Yet, in the year of his title defence, Rocky failed to win a race, although he did take three second places on his way to third in the championship in 2014.[17]
