Mirko Bortolotti (born 10 January 1990 in Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Italy) is an Italian racing driver, who competes in the 2022 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Grasser Racing Team.[1] A winner of the Italian Formula 3 Championship and GT3 specialist, Bortolotti made his DTM debut as a guest driver for T3 Motorsport midway through the season as a factory driver for Lamborghini.[1]
Background[]
Bortolotti began his career in karting, racing at national and later European level until the end of 2005.[2] 2005 also saw Bortolotti enter his first racing car series, joining the Italian Formula Junior and Italian Formula Renault 2.0 series.[2] After finishing in the midfield in both, Bortolotti would move into race cars full time in 2006, claiming second in Formula Abarth.[2]
Italy's Next Hope: 2007 - 2011[]
Bortolotti moved into the Italian Formula 3 Championship for 2007, securing one win en-route to fourth in the championship.[2] A second season in Italian F3 for Bortolotti followed in 2008, with the Italian youth going on to dominate the season, claiming nine wins and the Championship title.[2] 2009 saw Bortolotti move into the new FIA Formula Two Championship, finishing fourth, while also making two appearances in the Formula 3 Euro Series.[2]
2009 also saw Bortolotti test for Ferrari, setting a new record lap for the Ferrari F2008 at their private Fiorano test circuit, before being considered to replace Luca Badoer towards the end of the season.[2] After missing out on that seat, Bortolotti moved to the GP3 Series for 2010, finishing eleventh overall after a single podium finish.[2] A return to FIA Formula Two followed in 2011, with the Italian racer claiming the Championship title with seven wins, and earning a test with Williams F1 at the end-of-season young driver test.[2]
GT3 Grace: 2012 - 2021[]
Bortolotti moved into GT racing in 2012 after failing to secure a seat in F1, joining the ADAC GT Masters, entering four races.[2] After a title winning season in the Eurocup Mégane Trophy in 2013, Bortolotti joined the Lamborghini stable of GT3 drivers in 2014, racing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe and Italian GT Championship, while also finishing as runner-up in Formula Acceleration 1.[2] 2015 saw Bortolotti moved into the Blancpain Endurance Series, while also running to fourth in Italian GT.[2]
The 2016 season saw Bortolotti complete an identical programme as he had in 2016, claiming four victories in Italian GT as he finished sixth.[2] 2017 saw Bortolotti claim the Endurance Cup title in Blancpain, while also making his debut in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship.[2] For 2018 and 2019 Bortolotti would focus mainly on the ADAC GT Masters once again, finishing as runner-up in 2019, before changing allegiance to Audi ahead of the 2020 season.[2]
The 2020 season saw Bortolotti claim one victory in the GT World Challenge Europe with the factory supported WRT team, before moving back to the Lamborghini stable ahead of 2021.[2]
DTM History[]
Bortolotti joined the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship ahead of the Assen round, as T3 Motorsport fielded a third Lamborghini for the round in the Netherlands.[1] The Italian racer duly impressed on his debut, leading the race before claiming his, T3's and Lamborghini's first DTM podium in the opening race at Assen.[3]
