Nico Müller (born 25 February 1992 in Thun, Bern, Switzerland) is a Swiss racing driver who competes in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.[1] Runner-up to René Rast in the 2019 season, Müller was to combine his DTM duties in 2020 with a campaign in the FIA Formula E Championship.[2]
Müller first joined the DTM in 2014, after Audi picked him for their roster of drivers, placing him at Team Rosberg alongside Jamie Green.[3] The Swiss racer would have a quiet maiden campaign, claiming one points finish en-route to nineteenth in the Championship.[4]
Retained for 2015 alongside Green, Müller would become a semi-regular point scorer, although he would slip to 21st in the Championship with 26 points.[5] Regardless, Müller would get a move to the secondary factory team Team Abt for 2016, and duly secured his maiden victory at the Norisring as he improved to ninth in the Championship.[6]
For 2017 Müller was placed in the full ABT Sportsline squad, although he would struggle in comparison to new teammate Mattias Ekström, sliding down to twelfth in the Championship.[7] The Swiss racer then took over as the team's lead driver as Robin Frijns replaced Ekström for 2018, moving back up to tenth in the Championship.[8]
Müller would enjoy his strongest DTM season in 2019, as a strong mid-season run saw the Swiss racer briefly flirt with a title bid, only to be blown away during the latter-half of the season by Champion Rast.[9]
Background[]
Müller began in karting spending three full seasons from 2004 to 2007, before a debut in Formula Renault, taking part in the Swiss version of the series.[10] Müller also competed in the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series that season, but he would only compete in the Swiss championship in 2009.[10] Winning the championship, Müller moved up into the GP3 Series for 2010.[10]
In two seasons of GP3, Müller achieved three victories and a best championship result of third, prompting Müller to move to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012.[10] A ninth place in the Championship in his rookie year was transformed into fifth place in the 2013 edition.[10] Audi then opted to adopt Müller, granting him a drive in the DTM for 2014.
DTM History[]
After taking sixteenth on his DTM debut at the 2014 Hockenheim Opening Race, Müller went on to take a best career finish of fifth in 2014 Moscow Raceway Race.[3] Three consecutive retirements following that result caused some to question Müller's ability, but Audi opted to retain him as a driver for 2015.
Full DTM Record[]
Müller's full results from his 102 starts in the DTM are outlined in a series of tables below.
