Paul di Resta (born 16 April 1986 in Uphall, West Lothian, Scotland) is a British racing driver and former DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters competitor, noted as having won the 2010 DTM Championship.[1] A former Formula One driver and cousin of Dario Franchitti, di Resta initially competed in the DTM between 2007 and 2010, before rejoining in 2014 after his F1 career came to an end.[2]
di Resta was signed by Mercedes ahead of the 2007 season, who subsequently placed him in the Persson Motorsport squad alongside Susie Stoddart.[3] An impressive rookie season saw the Scot claim four podium finishes across the season, en-route to fifth in the Championship.[4]
Mercedes promoted the Scot into their factory HWA outfit for 2008, and duly delivered his first race victory at the Lausitzring on the way to finishing as runner-up.[5] A second season with HWA in 2009 saw di Resta again challenge for the title, although only one race victory at his home race at Brands Hatch left him in third.[6]
2010 would be di Resta's stand-out season, with the Brit finishing on the podium four times, while also claiming three race victories on top of that tally.[7] That earned him the DTM Championship and a race seat in F1, with the Scot racing in the elite single-seater series through to the end of 2013.[8]
After losing his F1 seat di Resta would return to the Mercedes DTM line-up for 2014, rejoining HWA to partner Christian Vietoris.[2] The Scot would have a very quiet return to the series however, failing to finish on the podium and only scoring points in three races.[9]
Retained for 2015 and partnered by Robert Wickens, di Resta would rediscover some of his former form, although he would only manage to secure eight in the Championship.[10] 2016 saw the Scot improve once more, claiming his first victory in over five years at the 2016 Hockenheim Opening Race 2 en-route to fifth in the Championship.[11]
Another win would come for di Resta during the 2017 season, although he would slip back to eleventh in the Championship.[12] Yet, a strong 2018 campaign saw di Resta challenge for the Championship for the first time since his return, with three victories seeing him finish third in the Championship.[13]
After Mercedes cancelled their DTM programme, di Resta would transfer his colours to the new Aston Martin effort, taking a role as their lead driver.[1] However, an uncompetitive and under-developed car meant that di Resta only claimed a handful of points finishes, while engine dramas meant he either retired or failed to start seven races.[14]
Background[]
After six years in karting, di Resta took the honours in the McLaren-Mercedes "Champions-of-the-Future" Series in 2000 and 2001, before moving into British Formula Renault.[15] In three seasons, di Resta managed to secure third in the series at his third attempt, before moving to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2005.[15] He took the Euro Series title in 2006, before getting his chance in the DTM for 2007.[15]
After becoming a Force India driver in Formula One for 2011, di Resta looked set to pursue a successful career in the premier form of motorsport.[15] However, after three seasons, di Resta was forced out of his F1 seat, despite being a consistent points scorer for his team, returning to the DTM with his former team.[15]
DTM History[]
In his debut season, di Resta marked his territory with two second places in his first three races, taking fifth in the 2007 championship.[16] In 2008, di Resta was handed a new 2008 Mercedes C-Class run by HWA Team, and duly delivered a first victory at the Lausitzring.[16] A second victory in Barcelona followed as di Resta made his way to second in the championship standings.[16]
Formula One Future[]
Third place in 2009 saw di Resta take a single victory, which came at his home race at Brands Hatch.[16] Yet, it was in 2010, which saw another home victory, when di Resta made his mark, having already been given a testing role in Formula 1.[16] Two further victories at Oschersleben and Hockenheim handed di Resta the championship title with 71 points.[16]
After three seasons in F1, di Resta returned to the DTM in 2014 having been forced out of Grand Prix racing at the end of 2013.[16] His difficult departure, however, clearly told, with di Resta failing to stand on the podium that year, with three fourth places his best result.[16] 2015 started much brighter for di Resta, as he took third in the opening race.

di Resta's full results from his 140 starts in the DTM are outlined in a series of tables below.
