Philip Ellis (born 3 October 1992 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany) is an Anglo-Swiss-German racing driver, who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Mercedes-AMG Team Winward.[1] Choosing to race under a Swiss racing licence, Ellis would partner DTM veteran Lucas Auer at Winward for 2021, having previously become the final Champion of the Audi Sport TT Cup in 2017.[2]
Background[]
Ellis began racing in minor karting Championships, before moving into the LO Formel Lista Junior in 2011, winning in his rookie season.[2] A move to the Formula 3 Euro Series would follow in 2012 for Ellis, although a lack of budget saw the the Anglo-Swiss racer only compete in a handful of races.[2] Funding issues then forced Ellis to missout on racing in 2013, with that hiatus to his racing career lasting until 2016.[2]
TTs and GTs: 2016 - 2020[]
In 2016 Ellis would revive his race career with a seat in the Audi Sport TT Cup in the DTM undercard, finishing sixth in his rookie season.[2] In 2017 Ellis would manage to secure the TT Cup title with five wins, earning him the attentions of Audi backed Phoenix Racing in the ADAC GT Masters for 2018.[2] Sixteenth overall would follow for Ellis after claiming one victory, with the Anglo-Swiss pilot getting a second season in GT Masters after moving to HTP Motorsport.[2]
2020 saw Ellis get his third run in GT Masters, improving to sixth alongside outings in the 24H GT Series and Michelin Pilot Challenge in the GT4 Class.[2]
DTM History[]
Ellis was signed by Mercedes-AMG Team Winward ahead of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, with the German-American squad, partnering the Anglo-Swiss racer in one of their two Mercedes-AMG GT3-Evos alongside Lucas Auer.[1] The opening round of the season in Monza saw Ellis retire with a mechanical failure after a promising start having qualified in sixth.[3] The second race in Monza would be better for Ellis, with the Swiss registered racer finishing in sixth after a late battle with Alexander Albon.[4]
