Philipp Eng (born 28 February 1990 in Salzburg, Austria) is an Austrian racing driver, who competes in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for BMW Team RBM.[1] A factory BMW Motorsport driver, Eng made his DTM debut in 2018, and would claim his maiden DTM victory in his sophomore season in 2019.[2][3]
Eng was first signed up to the DTM in 2018, with BMW placing him in BMW Team RMR to partner Timo Glock after graduating from the Junior Team.[2] Eng subsequently claimed his maiden DTM podium in his third race, his first pole in his fourth race, and would go on to finish ninth with 102 points to emerge as the best rookie.[4]
Eng was retained for the 2019 season, and duly claimed his maiden victory at the third race in Zolder.[3] With that, Eng would become a regular point scorer, ending the season in sixth with 144 points.[5]
Background[]
Eng started his racing career in karting at the age of ten, and would continue to compete in karts until the end of the 2005 season.[6] In 2006 Eng would graduate to the Formula BMW ADAC series, as well as the Formula BMW UK.[6] He would finish in tenth in the Championship in the former series, with 73 points to his credit and a single podium.[6]
Single-Seater Ambitions: 2007 - 2010[]
Eng remained in Formula BMW for 2007, and duly claimed third in the ADAC Series, before claiming victory in the World Final at the end of the season.[6] For 2008 he moved into the German Formula 3 Championship and Formula BMW Europe, although he would only complete partial campaigns in both.[6] For 2009 Eng secured a seat in the inaugural FIA Formula Two Championship, claiming a single victory to become the first Austrian driver to win a "Formula Two" race since Jo Gartner in 1983.[6]
Eng had a test for the GP2 Series at the end of 2009, but opted to remain in the Formula Two Championship for 2010.[6] A stronger campaign saw Eng claim three victories and secure sixth in the Championship, before moving away from single seaters at the end of the season.[6]
Porsches and GTs: 2011 - 2017[]
2011 saw Eng secure a seat in the ADAC GT Masters, while also getting a run-out in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.[6] After being unclassified in both, Eng would transfer to the Porsche Cup Deutschland full time in 2012, claiming tenth in the Championship.[6] 2013 saw him again improve to fifth in the Porsche Cup, while also making his debut in the Blancpain Endurance Series.[6]
For 2014 Eng would dovetail his Carrera Cup Deutschland campaign with a full run at the w:c:motorsport:Porsche Supercup, and duly claimed the title in the former with two victories.[6] He would repeat that feat in 2015, claiming nine wins, while also securing the Supercup crown on the Formula One support bill, attracting rumours of a potential switch back to single seaters.[6] However, Eng would remain in the realm of GT and Sportscars for 2016, signing up to become a BMW factory driver in the Blancpain GT Series.[6]
His first full Blancpain campaign saw Eng claim a single Sprint victory, while also making his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut, finishing eighth.[6] 2017 saw Eng dovetail his Blancpain duties with a run in the ADAC GT Masters, with the Austrian racer ending the season in fourth in the latter with a single victory.[6]
DTM History[]
Eng signed up to the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship alongside fellow BMW Junior Driver Joel Eriksson ahead of the 2018 season, with BMW placing him in the Team RMR team alongside Timo Glock.[2] His debut came at the 2018 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, although he would run at the back of the field throughout to sixteenth.[7] It was a similarly quiet run in the Second Race for the Austrian racer, as he again failed to challenge for points.[8]
Enigmatic Endeavours: 2018[]
Eng would score his first points and podium finish at the third round at the Lausitzring, having briefly battled his way to the front of the field, before being passed late on by Edoardo Mortara and Glock.[9] Eng subsequently stormed to his maiden pole position at the 2018 Lausitzring Race 2, although he would steadily slide down the field to seventh during the race.[10] A mixed weekend for Eng then followed at the Hungaroring, with the Austrian racer finishing a lowly eighteenth in Race 1, before fighting to third in the second race with a well timed stop in wet conditions.[11]
Eng's form carried into the Norisring, although he would miss out on a potential podium finish due to making an early stop from second.[12] The second race was more disappointing for Eng as he failed to challenge for points, with a similar anonymous performance following in the first race at Zandvoort.[13] The Second Race in Zandvoort would then see Eng qualify at the head of the field before falling to fourth in the race, having lacked the pace of the leaders.[14]
Eng then led the BMW charge in the two races in Brands Hatch, claiming fifth and seventh, before claiming eighth in the 2018 Misano Race 1 after heavy contact with Lucas Auer.[15] Eng subsequently failed to score in the next two races, before claiming eighth in the 2018 Nürburgring Race 2 having qualified in third, the result of excess tyre wear.[16] Eighth and ninth place finishes in his two home races in Speilberg, Austria, followed, before he rounded out the year with twelfth and eighth at the season finale in Hockenheim.[4]
Eng would therefore end his maiden DTM campaign with 102 points to his credit, placing him as the best rookie in the 2018 Championship in ninth.[4]
BMW Bounties: 2019[]
Eng was retained by BMW for the 2019 Season, and was once again placed in the Team RMR squad alongside Glock.[17] Eng had a difficult start to the season after an electrical failure in qualifying for the 2019 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, and hence finished a lap down and outside of the points.[18] He duly bounced back to claim pole position for the Second Race, although he was powerless to prevent three Audis charging past him in the race as rain began to fall.[19]
Eng's breakout result, however, would come at the 2019 Zolder Race 1, as the Austrian racer charged up the field after his stop to claim victory, passing Eriksson and René Rast with well timed lunges.[3] Eng subsequently claimed second in the Second Race, having recovered from a first corner off while challenging for the lead with an early stop.[20] His fifth career podium finish would come at the next round in Misano, as Eng claimed second place after another battling performance, but would be unable to challenge Nico Müller for victory.[21]
Eng had a less spectacular run in Norisring, finishing seventh and fifth in the two races, before another battling performance to claim fourth in the 2019 Assen Race 1.[22] A rather disappointing run to thirteenth in the Second Assen race followed, leaving Eng in fourth in the Championship at the halfway point in the season.[23] Brands Hatch Race 1 would then see Eng fight with Loïc Duval to the finish in a fight for fifth, a battle won by the Frenchman, before running to fifth in the Second Race after opting against making a gamble to make his stop while a Slow Zone was active.[24]
Another fifth place for Eng followed at the 2019 Lausitzring Race 1 after a quiet race, before a charge from the back of the field to tenth in the 2019 Lausitzring Race 2.[25] A disappointing run to thirteenth in the 2019 Nürburgring Race 1 came next, followed by a better run to eighth in the Second Race to be the best BMW in a race dominated by Audi.[26] A disappointing end to the season then followed, as Eng suffered an engine failure and then a non-score in the 2019 Hockenheim Finale Race 2, leaving him in sixth in the Championship with 144 points.[5]
Factory Fortunes: 2020[]
The 2020 Season would see BMW move Eng to the Team RBM outfit for the season, with the Austrian racer becoming the team's lead driver alongside Sheldon van der Linde.[1]
