Pietro Fittipaldi da Cruz (born 23 June 1996 in Miami, Florida, USA) is a Brazilian racing driver, who competed in the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Audi Sport Team WRT.[1] The grandson of two-time Formula One Champion Enzo Fittipaldi, Fittipaldi would join the DTM after racing in various categories, including NASCAR, FIA Formula 3 European Championship and the IndyCar Series.[1]

Fittipaldi's maiden DTM campaign would be a mixed one, with the Brazilian racer competing for the privateer Team WRT alongside Jonathan Aberdein.[1] He would also race for the semi-factory supported Audi Sport Team Rosberg squad in place of Jamie Green for one race meeting, and would end the season in fifteenth in the Championship with 22 points.[2]

Background[]

Fittipaldi began his career in karting in both the United States and Brazil, before graduating into the National level NASCAR All-American Series in 2011.[3] The Brazilian youth duly claimed the unofficial title, with four wins, and would remain in the series for 2012, albeit with less success.[3] With that Fittipaldi moved into single-seaters, while also moving across to the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean to race in the United Kingdom.[3]

Junior Jives: 2013 - 2015[]

Fittipaldi secured drives in the Protyre Formula Renault Championship and BRDC F4 Championship for 2013, and would collect wins in both in his rookie season.[3] Fittipaldi subsequently claimed the Protyre FR Championship in 2014, claiming ten wins, while also racing in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0.[3] For 2015, having been granted a seat in the Ferrari Driver Academy Fittipaldi transferred into the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, although he would only score a handful of points finishes en-route to sixteenth.[3][4]

Expanded Experiences: 2016 - 2020[]

After winning the 2015-16 MRF Challenge Formula 2000, Fittipaldi moved into the Formula V8 3.5 Series for 2016, finishing tenth.[3] He remained in the Series in 2017, and would impress with six victories and the Championship title, earning him a seat in the IndyCar Series for 2018, as well as the FIA World Endurance Championship.[3] However, his season was overshadowed by a huge accident qualifying for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, with a heavy crash at Raidillon leaving the Brazilian with fractures and breaks in both legs.[3]

Fittipaldi would recover from his injuries before the end of the season, and subsequently made his Formula One test debut at the season ending Yas Marina test for Haas.[3] He was subsequently signed as their official test and reserve driver for the 2019 season, a deal which was also renewed for 2020.[3][5]

DTM History[]

Fittipaldi signed up to the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship ahead of the 2019 Season, joining Audi's stable of drivers and their new customer team Team WRT, partnering Jonathan Aberdein.[1] Fittipaldi's debut came in the 2019 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, with the Brazilian racer scoring tenth and a debut points finish after batting up from fifteenth on the grid.[6] The second race was less successful for Fittipaldi, as the Brazilian racer failed to threaten the points after contact with Marco Wittmann, although he did record the fastest lap.[7]

Wavering Fortunes: 2019[]

Fittipaldi would again fail to score at the Opening Race in Zolder, before sweeping to ninth place in the Second Race after gambling on an early stop to gain ground.[8] Fittipaldi was subsequently transferred to the Audi Sport Team Rosberg squad for the Misano round, after Jamie Green would miss the race after an operation.[9] Andrea Dovizioso would take Fittipaldi's WRT seat for the weekend, with Fittipaldi himself finishing the first race in eleventh, just ahead of his stand-in.[9] A better run for Fittipaldi followed in the 2019 Misano Race 2, with the Brazilian racer fighting for the podium throughout, before slipping to fifth late on.[10]

Fittipaldi returned to Team WRT for the Norisring round, although his run in the first race was ended at the Grundig Kehre as he receive multiple taps before smashing into one of the Aston Martins to retire.[11] He subsequently had two non-scores in the following two races, failing to threaten the points in either, before scoring tenth in the 2019 Assen Race 2 after battling at the back of the points.[12] A heavy crash during qualifying for the 2019 Brands Hatch Race 1 would follow for Fittipaldi, which ruled him out of the race, before finishing last in the second race, albeit with fastest lap while still carrying minor damage from his accident.[13]

Fittipaldi bounced back to claim seventh in the 2019 Lausitzring Race 1 without much drama, before another quiet race to ninth in the Second Race.[14] The following round at the Nürburgring would also be a quiet run for Fittipaldi, as he failed to finish in the points in either, having sustained minor damage in both races, and was the only Audi pilot not to score in the Second Race.[15] Fittipaldi then rounded out the season with two fifteenth place finishes at the Hockenheimring, leaving him in fifteenth in the Championship with 22 points.[2]
