Sophia Flörsch (born 1 December 2000 in Grünwald, Bavaria, Germany) is a German racing driver, who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for ABT Sportsline.[1] One of the highest rated young female drivers, Flörsch would become the first woman to secure a DTM seat since Rahel Frey and Susie Wolff raced in the series in 2012.[1]
Background[]
Flörsch began karting in 2005, racing in her native Germany and later across Europe until 2014 with various outfits scouting her progress.[2] In 2015 Flörsch moved to the UK to compete in the Ginetta Junior Championship, claiming two wins to set herself up as an early title contender, before funding issues curtailed her campaign.[2] Returning to Germany for 2016, Flörsch would secure a campaign in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship for the season, finishing nineteenth after completing the full campaign.[2]
The Trodden Path: 2017 - 2020[]
A sophomore season of ADAC F4 would follow for Flörsch in 2017, with the German youth improving to thirteenth with two podium finishes, as well as a partial campaign in the Italian F4 Championship.[2] In 2018 Flörsch progressed to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, claiming one point after missing out the first third of the season.[2] The end of the season then saw Flörsch make her debut at the Macau Grand Prix, with the German racer notably suffering a huge accident that left her with a spinal fracture.[2]
For 2019 Flörsch moved to the w:c:motorsport:Formula Regional European Championship, having recovered from her spinal fracture after a successful 10 hour operation the day after her Macau accident.[2] Furthermore, she would reject a chance to join the fledging W Series championship designed to focus on female drivers, stating that she felt the series was a "step back on a sporting level" for women, hinting at the fact that the new series would segregate men and women.[2][3] Regardless, Flörsch would go on to claim seventh in the Championship, while also making a return to the Macau Grand Prix without much success.[2]
2020 saw Flörsch move into the FIA Formula 3 Championship, as well as forming part of an all-female entry in the European Le Mans Series and 24 Hours of Le Mans.[2] Unfortunately for Flörsch she would not find success in any of those series, although Flörsch did do enough to secure a second season in the ELMS with the Richard Mille squad for 2021.[2]
DTM History[]
Flörsch was signed as the third driver for ABT Sportsline ahead of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, having been one of several drivers to sample the DTM Electric concept car that was set to form the Series' medium to long term future.[1] Regardless, for 2021 Flörsch would be equipped with an R8 LMS Evo for her rookie DTM season, with Mike Rockenfeller and Kelvin van der Linde listed as her teammates.[1] Her debut came at the season opening round in Monza, where she would spend most of the race scrapping with fellow female pilot Esmee Hawkey at the back of the field in both races.[4]
