Thomas Preining (born 21 July 1998 in Linz, Upper Austria, Austria) is an Austrian racing driver, who competes for KÜS Team Bernhard in the 2022 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship.[1] A factory Porsche driver, Preining moved to the DTM alongside Team Bernhard, after both had spent the 2021 season competing in the ADAC GT Masters.[1]
Background[]
Preining began his career in karting in his native Austria, competing in various Rotax Championships from 2009 onward.[2] After winning numerous national and European karting titles, Preining moved into single-seater racing in 2015, taking a seat in the ADAC Formel 4 Championship.[2] Six races saw Preining claim a single podium finish, while also making a handful of appearances in the Italian F4 Championship.[2]
Porsche Power: 2016 - 2018[]
2016 saw Preining move into car racing full time, with the Austrian subsequently picking up two wins en-route to fourth in the 2016 ADAC F4 Series.[2] That attracted the attentions of Porsche, who offered the Austrian a seat in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for 2017, supporting the FIA Formula One World Championship.[2] Preining would also race in the German version of the Carrera Cup as well, claiming one win across all of his series.[2]
After signing a deal to become a Porsche factory driver for 2018, Preining would enjoy the best season of his early career.[2][3] Ten victories in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany saw the Austrian win that series outright, while four wins in ten in the Supercup left him in third in Porsche's biggest single-make series.[2] Preining would also get his first taste of the World Endurance Championship, racing for Porsche's customers Gulf Racing UK.[2]
Endurance Edge: 2019 - 2021[]
Preining would move into endurance racing full time in 2019, getting a full WEC/ELMS programme with Proton Competition, as well as a factory seat in the ADAC GT Masters.[2] Claiming one win apiece in each category, Preining would spend the condensed 2020 season competing in the GTE-Am for a Porsche customer team, while also competing in the Intercontinental GT Challenge.[2] A low-key season saw Preining finish towards the back of the field in all of the Championships he took part in, although he would get a test in Porsche's w:c:formulae:FIA Formula E Championship car after being declared as their development driver.[2]
In 2021 Preining returned to the GT Masters, claiming two podium finishes en-route to thirteenth in the Championship.[2]
DTM History[]
Preining was announced as the driver for KÜS Team Bernhard on the same day that the Porsche backed squad revealed that they were moving their colours over from the GT Masters to the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for 2022.[1]
