Tom Leonard Blomqvist (born 30 November 1993 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK) is an Anglo-Swedish racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2015 and 2017.[1] The son of 1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, Blomqvist would serve as a factory BMW driver throughout his time in the Series, before leaving to take a seat in the FIA Formula E Championship.[2]
Blomqvist made his debut at the start of the 2015 season, with BMW placing him in Team RBM alongside Augusto Farfus after finishing second in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2014.[3] The British licensed racer would take time to find his feet in the series, although he would claim a surprise victory at Oschersleben en-route to fourteenth in the Championship.[4]
Retained by Team RBM for 2016 but placed alongside Maxime Martin, Blomqvist would claim four podium finishes, improving to sixth in the Championship.[5] Yet, the 2017 season would be a disappointing one, with the Brit failing to finish on the podium as he slipped to seventeenth in the Championship.[6]
After the end of the 2017 season BMW would remove Blomqvist from their DTM programme, instead placing him in the FIA Formula E Championship, before taking a seat in their WEC and IMSA programmes.[2]
Background[]
After several years in go-karting from the age of 10, Blomqvist started racing cars in 2009, racing in the Swedish version of the Formula Renault Championship.[1] His campaign ended with the Brit taking third place in the final standings, with occasional appearances in the British Formula Renault Championship.[1] He opted to compete in the British version full time in 2010, a move which resulted in him becoming the youngest ever winner of the Championship.[1]
McLaren began tracking Blomqvist's progress from that moment onward, signing for their Driver Development Programme in 2012.[7] He celebrated this with a rookie campaign in the Formula 3 Euro Series, a season that finished with him in seventh overall.[1] A similar campaign followed in 2013, before Blomqvist finally fulfilled his promise in 2014.[1] Six victories saw Blomqvist end the season as runner-up, and prompted attention from BMW and their DTM campaign.
DTM History[]
Joey Hand's departure from BMW's DTM programme at the end of 2014 freed up a seat in their eight car squad, with Blomqvist joining in February 2015.[3] His debut came at the season opening 2015 DTM Festival in Hockenheim in early May, with Blomqvist impressing in qualifying for race one as the best placed BMW driver. It was not to be his weekend, however, with the young Brit failing to score despite his strong qualifying performance.
