Tom Kristensen (born 7 July 1967 in Hobro, Nordjylland, Denmark) is a Danish former racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2004 and 2011.[1] A factory Audi driver throughout his time in the DTM, Kristensen was better known for his exploits in sportscars, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans a record nine times.[2]
Kristensen made his DTM debut at the start of the 2004 season, when Audi placed him alongside Christian Abt within their factory Audi Team Abt Sportsline effort.[3] The Dane went on to produce an impressive rookie campaign, scoring one win at Oschersleben and frequently fighting for the podium to finish fourth in the Championship.[2]
Retained by Abt and Audi for 2005, Kristensen would get a new teammate in the form of Le Mans partner Allan McNish for the season.[4] Five podiums would follow for Kristensen as he moved up to third in the Championship hunt, although the Dane failed to win a race.[2]
2006 saw Kristensen partnered by ex-Formula One ace Heinz-Harald Frentzen, once again in the secondary pair of Abt Sportsline entries.[5] Another strong season with two victories saw Kristensen challenge for the title, although by the end of the season the Dane would settle for third.[2]
The 2007 season would see Timo Scheider move across to join Kristensen at Abt Sportsline, although a huge accident in the season opening race for Kristesen would ruin his season.[6] Indeed, Kristensen would only return to the field at the fifth race of the campaign, and would only claim a handful of points as he slipped to fourteenth in the Championship hunt.[2]
Despite missing almost half of the 2007 season, Kristensen was handed a fifth DTM campaign in 2008, with the Dane again partnered by Scheider.[7] Kristensen would go on to claim three podium finishes en-route to eighth in the Championship, as his teammate stormed to the title.[2]
The Kristensen-Scheider partnership was retained for a third straight campaign in 2009, with the Dane opening the campaign with victory at the opening round.[8] Yet, Kristensen would fail to make a lasting bid for the Championship title, meaning he would slip to eighth come the end of the season as Scheider retained the crown.[2]
Kristensen left the DTM at the end of 2009, instead focusing on Audi's sportscar programme as they attempted to expand into the United States.[2] Yet, Kristensen would make one final appearance in 2011, standing in for Mike Rockenfeller at the 2011 Lausitzring Race.[1]
