Vincent Abril (born 1 March 1995 in Alès, Occitanie, France) is a French racing driver who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Mercedes-AMG Team HRT.[1] Racing under a Monegasque racing licence, Abril arrived in DTM having previously won the GT3 based Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup in 2015.[1]
Background[]
Abril began his career in karting, before moving into racing cars in 2011, when the teenager signed up to join the SEAT León Supercopa France championship, finishing fifteenth.[2] After a second season in the Supercopa, which saw Abril finish fourth in the series with two wins, the Frenchman moved into the French GT Championship in 2013.[2] Finishing fourth overall in the French Championship, Abril would move up to compete in the Blancpain GT Series in the Sprint Cup class for 2014, alongside a second full season in French GT.[2]
Blancpain, Bentleys and Bathurst: 2014 - 2020[]
Abril's 2014 campaign proved to be a difficult one, with the Frenchman only claiming one podium in both of his nominated series for the season to finish outside of the top ten in both.[2] Yet, he would bounce back in 2015 having been signed as a factory driver for Bentley and MSport, taking the Sprint Cup Pro championship in Blancpain in partnership with Maximilian Buhk.[2] For 2016 Bentley would move Abril into a duel campaign in both the Sprint and Endurance cups in Blancpain, although Abril was unable to defend his crown in the former.[2]
A stronger 2017 season would follow for Abril, as the Frenchman claimed second in the Endurance Cup for Bentley, while also completing a full campaign in the Pirelli World Challenge for one of the British marque's customer teams.[2] Retained for 2018 Abril would again try to claim honours for Bentley in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, while also making his debut in the 24 Hours of Spa and the Bathurst 12 Hour Race.[2] Yet, success would again disappear for the Frenchman, with the Frenchman failing to threaten the podium in any of his various outings.[2]
2019 saw Abril step away from being a full factory Bentley driver after a disappointing start to the season, which saw a third bid to win Bathurst fade and a poor pair of results in the IGTC.[2] However, Abril would get to make his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche in GTE-Am, while also getting to sample GT3 cars from Mercedes and Ferrari.[2] In 2020 Abril would secure third in the International GT Open with the pseudo-factory AF Corse team, piloting a Ferrari, while also making his second appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.[2]
DTM History[]
Abril was offered a seat at the Haupt Racing Team ahead of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship after the Series' switch to GT3 based rules for its 22nd season.[1] The Frenchman, who subsequently revealed that he would race under a Monegasque licence for the season, was duly unveiled alongside DTM returnee Maximilian Götz to run the #5 HRT run Mercedes-AMG GT3-Evo for the season.[1] The Frenchman duly repaid their faith by claiming pole position for the season opening 2021 Monza Race 1, although a slight Balance of Performance adjustment and a plucky strategy from Liam Lawson saw Abril finish second to the New Zealander.[3]
