The W Series Championship is an international motorracing championship, sanctioned by the British Racing & Sports Car Club, designed to promote female drivers and aid their ambitions to climb up the motorsports ladder.[1] First announced on 18 October 20180 the W Series would partner with the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, using their calendar as a basis, while Hitech GP were signed to run all twenty of the Championship's twenty Tatuus T-318 Formula 3 cars.[1][2][3]
The inaugural W Series Championship was staged in 2019, with six rounds supporting the DTM through the season.[4] Jamie Chadwick would emerge as the inaugural Champion, with the Series' success resulting in the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile officially recognising the Championship from 2020 onward.[5]
Concept[]
Championship Format[]
The inaugural W Series Championship would begin with a selection/qualification process, with 54 applicants in the original registration.[6] Of those 54, twenty drivers qualified, with eighteen selected to race, while two were placed on the reserve list.[7] Those eighteen, plus reserves, would then fight in the Championship in 2019, with a six race calendar established for the inaugural campaign.[8]
For the 2019 Season the Championship would use the FIA's standardised points system, awarding points to the top ten.[9]
History[]
The W Series was founded on 10 October 2018, with the creation of W Series Limited as the Series' promoter in tandem with backing from several high profile motorsports personalities.[1] The first qualification/selection process began immediately, with 54 applicants narrowed down to twenty over several months.[7]
Maiden Magicians: 2019[]
Supporting the DTM Championship, the W Series would see five drivers emerge with race victories, as Jamie Chadwick went on to claim the inaugural title with two victories.[10]
